I'm trying to browse audiobooks in the Books app on my Mac, but the audiobook tab doesn't exist. I'm in the US. I've checked for app updates but there aren't any.

Are you signed into a non-US account? If so, then even though you are in the US then you're probably connected to a non-US store, and not all store locales have an audiobook store.
Oh I see. So evidently you are running old macOS. Audiobooks moved to the Books app in 10.15. At the same time, iTunes went away in favor of the new Music app.
Nope. A US account. I finally found audiobooks when I looked in iTunes, but I was under the impression that the audio store was also in the Books app.
Ah, thank you! Yes, I have version 10.14. Been planning to upgrade. Thanks again for solving the mystery. I love Apple, but sometimes you need a PhD to troubleshoot small issues.
