iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

One convo with my phone should not scratch a phone designed for such. My last phone is 4 years old no scratches at all. Don’t be a troll when multiple ppl have the same issue.

Multiple people have the same issue because they are damaging their phones by scratching them with something hard or sharp and not applying a screen protector at purchase.

It's your decision, but your action has caused it to become scratched.

That's not trolling, it's the truth.

I can post this again - most tests have shown the iPhone screen to be between 5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale.

Anything harder scraped against the screen will scratch it.

It wasn't salt or pepper, it was something harder like a particle of sand or gravel that is very prevalent in most homes even if you don't notice them.

The iPhone screens are between 5.5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale so you have a better idea of what can and can't scratch them.

Note granite, at Mohs 6, is the most common component of sand or gravel.

I know you never broke a screen, but in recent years the number of complaints here about shattered screens have dropped from being a daily occurrence to relatively rare.

I don’t disagree with you, but I just upgraded from an xr to a 12 and I’ve dropped my xr on so many occasions I’ve had it well over a year and a half it still has less scratches than this 12 I got 3 hours ago. I haven’t even dropped it or anything I have it on the charger and it’s scratched up all over the place and I’m just like.... confused because now I have no choice BUT to get a screen protector.

No one uses?

Almost everyone applies a screen protector at purchase, whether they buy one to apply themselves or buy a Belkin in-store to have Apple Store staff apply it.

The rule of thumb is to never even touch the screen until a screen protector has been applied first. I've done that with every iPhone since the original, and I've owned all models since then.

Apple doesn't care what you do or don't do, it's called personal responsibility. You don't have to wash your car, either, but the automaker also won't cover it under warranty when your paint starts peeling off the car due to environmental damage. They also won't cover front end rock chips, which are prevented by applying the automotive equivalent of a screen protector, the clear bra.

Other manufacturers do it differently - Samsung applies a screen protector at the factory, which Apple could also do but they would have to increase prices to do so, and they prefer to treat their customers as adults and allow them to decide for themselves which protector best suits their needs, even if that's none at all.

It is a strong screen, especially when it comes to shatter resistance.

But strength does not mean scratch-resistance - however, even then something harder than Mohs 5.5 is required to scratch the screen, so most materials will not:

As an aside, to quote LiveScience:

The most common component of sand is silicon dioxide in the form of quartz. The Earth's landmasses are made up of rocks and minerals, including quartz, feldspar and mica.

https://www.livescience.com/34748-what-is-sand-beach-sand.html

Looking at the slide I posted earlier, quartz is Mohs 7, which is higher than the 6 - 7 tests have shown for the iPhone 12 screen.

So that means a single grain of sand that somehow enters your pocket would be enough to possibly scratch the display if it drags past it.

Note it also doesn't have to be you; virtually all jeans are "stone washed" or dried in a sandy material to give them a lightly worn look during manufacturing, and that involves… quartz.

Cosmetic / natural wear and tear is not a warranty or accidental-damage related issue.

The up-side of this though is that if you are still within your normal retail return period I would suggest seeing if you can return it. If you got it from Apple online or thru an Apple store they do have a no-hassle return policy and purely natural wear and tear that falls below the threshold of accidental damage shouldn't be a problem. Then you could buy a new iPhone, and get a screen protector for that one.

If you're outside the normal retail return period from the store or carrier where you bought it I would get a screen protector to avoid future wear and tear. Although it wouldn't be applicable to the current situation you might want to consider getting AppleCare+ for accidental damage protection if you ever get damage beyond cosmetic in the future.

Yeah he sure did, but at this point how would calling the store help? It's not like there's proof that he said that... I'm not really putting blame on him, other than that, he was a great salesman. I'm putting the blame on Apple for this. I've had 3 other iPhones in my lifetime and none of them have EVER had that issue. Just disappointed in the quality this time around. I of course will be purchasing a screen protector today if time allows, but it's the principle for me.

What you're not understanding is the glass formula on the newest gen iPhones is stronger - From being shattered in a fall. But to make glass less likely to break, doesn't mean it's harder to scratch.

Read this --> Why is my iPhone 11 getting scratches?

It was written for iPhone 11 and yes, the formula is different on iPhone 12, but the article is still applicable. People keep comparing their 3, 4 or 5 year ago purchased phones to the newer phones of todays. There is no comparison. The glass isn't inferior. It's designed purposely to break less often, which cost often cost people $$Hundreds of dollars to replace, whereas a simple screen protector costs a few dollars to protect a screen from scratches.

Glass is glass and it will scratch no matter how fancy Apple makes it sound. Yes it’s stronger but not invincible. If you’re someone like me who doesn’t care much about aesthetics of the screen then just put a case on with the lip coming out further than the screen to add some sort of protection. If you wanted to keep your phone in pristine condition you should have put on a screen protector and case before using it.

So he can be educated so he doesn't mislead other buyers.

I can understand completely if you don't want to bother, you're not responsible for their employee training.
