iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

Well, after contacting both Vodafone (my upgrade provider) and Apple, the response for both was no replacement.. Apple support encouraged me to write up a proper negative feedback, which i did and neither of them offered any care advice.

After a bit of research I bought a screen protector by Mous Uk, what they call hybrid glass, and Im very happy wt it. It comes wt an applicator and instructions and I cannot notice the scratches underneath it now, also the touch response is the same as not using any protector. I just wish I knew beforehand about this screen flaw in the new models as I would have waited and installed this even before i turned on the phone for the first time. I never had that with previous models, my last Iphone XS was used wt no screen protector for two years and nothing like this happened.

Apple should definitely review and improve this glass screen, this is not good enough for a device this expensive. #unimpressed

After contacting Apple. I was told I could mail in the iPhone and wait time could be at least two weeks but the scratched screen would have to be replaced under my AppleCare and would cost $40 AU. There are no parts to actually replace the screen at my cost anyway at this time due to it being a new phone model.

not happy that it scratched so easily.

the senior customer relations person told me the phone has undergone extensive testing which meant to me somehow this was my fault.

I explained my earlier model iWatch has not a scratch on it after years of use. He explained the iWatch surface on the higher models is harder to scratch due to higher quality watch surface. The thought that went through my mind at that time was why didn’t they use the iWatch more durable glass surface for the new iPhone surface? It surely wouldn’t have then scratched under normal usage. This phone is only a week old. My concern is what will happen after a year of use age. A screen protector appears to be necessary. If so then why doesn’t it come with one in the first place.

It wasn't salt or pepper, it was something harder like a particle of sand or gravel that is very prevalent in most homes even if you don't notice them.

The iPhone screens are between 5.5 and 6 on the Mohs hardness scale so you have a better idea of what can and can't scratch them.

Note granite, at Mohs 6, is the most common component of sand or gravel.

I know you never broke a screen, but in recent years the number of complaints here about shattered screens have dropped from being a daily occurrence to relatively rare.

I don’t disagree with you, but I just upgraded from an xr to a 12 and I’ve dropped my xr on so many occasions I’ve had it well over a year and a half it still has less scratches than this 12 I got 3 hours ago. I haven’t even dropped it or anything I have it on the charger and it’s scratched up all over the place and I’m just like.... confused because now I have no choice BUT to get a screen protector.

HOWEVER...

although I agree with some of what dogcow moof states

I think MANY of us feel/think ~

A warning/caution paper/notice - ON TOP, WHEN YOU OPEN THE NEW PHONE

OR maybe a thin plastic cover ON THE PHONE SCREEN.

Should be included to REMIND/EXPLAIN AND WARN the purchaser

This phone was very expensive. We were owed the information (that dogcow moof wrote above - and I’ve quoted his info below)

-this is a MUCH softer, MORE PRONE TO SCRATCHES screen than previous versions of the phone)

As dogcow moof explained above ~

”• The glass is softer and more prone to scratching than on much older iPhones as it is more shatter-resistant.

• For maximum protection a screen protector should always be applied immediately after removing the iPhone from its box and before using the screen in any way.”

Many of us have been EXTREMELY LOYAL, LONG TIME iPhone purchasers.

Apple should NOW (and should have) made the difference apparent to EVERY PURCHASER.

OBVIOUSLY, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A HUGE INVESTMENT FOR APPLE!

and would have avoided many unhappy customers.

Glass is glass and it will scratch no matter how fancy Apple makes it sound. Yes it’s stronger but not invincible. If you’re someone like me who doesn’t care much about aesthetics of the screen then just put a case on with the lip coming out further than the screen to add some sort of protection. If you wanted to keep your phone in pristine condition you should have put on a screen protector and case before using it.

Fingernails are Mohs 2.5, iPhone glass has been found to be between Mohs 5 and 6.

A material of a particular strength can only be scratched by material of a higher number Mohs classification.

It's more likely that a stray fragment of granite, the most common component of sand or debris, was at fault and is to be found in a pocket or other place the phone was placed where it scraped against other materials.

Oh I have, dont you worry... i am doing something about it, more importantly will have to reconsider my choice of phone in the future

and yes, more shatterproof doesn’t mean scratch proof, which is why so many of us here have the same complaint

and also you trying to dismiss it doesn’t add anything to this discussion

I'm not dismissing anything, this is what the state of the art is in smartphone glass.

You can dislike it, you can say you will never buy another iPhone, but it's what the industry as a whole is facing.

Note that Samsung "solves" this by applying a screen protector at the factory; if you prefer Apple could raise the price of the iPhone $30 and do the same, but I'd rather they leave it to customers to decide.

SamMobile: Does the Galaxy S20 come with a screen protector? Yes it does!
