iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

Well, after contacting both Vodafone (my upgrade provider) and Apple, the response for both was no replacement.. Apple support encouraged me to write up a proper negative feedback, which i did and neither of them offered any care advice.

After a bit of research I bought a screen protector by Mous Uk, what they call hybrid glass, and Im very happy wt it. It comes wt an applicator and instructions and I cannot notice the scratches underneath it now, also the touch response is the same as not using any protector. I just wish I knew beforehand about this screen flaw in the new models as I would have waited and installed this even before i turned on the phone for the first time. I never had that with previous models, my last Iphone XS was used wt no screen protector for two years and nothing like this happened.

Apple should definitely review and improve this glass screen, this is not good enough for a device this expensive. #unimpressed

CNet says keys won't scratch the iPhone 12, either:

For the first test, I put the iPhone 12 in a small makeup bag with some of the common culprits that scratch up our phones: a set of keys, a half dozen quarters and a metallic pen. I shook the bag vigorously for about 30 seconds to simulate what happens after a few weeks of bouncing around in a purse or pocket before inspecting it.

After wiping the phone down with a cloth, I couldn't find a single scratch on the glass or the frame of the iPhone 12.

CNet: iPhone 12 drop test results are in: Ceramic shield is as tough as it sounds

The thing is, phone screens are between Mohs 5 and 6 in hardness.

Ordinary brass keys are around a 4 on the scale which means they won't scratch the glass or at least not that visibly.

On the other hand, the most common materials in sand and gravel are granite (Mohs 6) and quartz (Mohs 7) which will.

Did you put it in your pocket with your diamond tiara. That is strange. I have never scratch a front except with a diamond... really. That Gorilla Glass is pretty stout stuff. Take it to the Apple Store and see if they can replace the display. My only, humble thoughts. Sorry I couldn’t be more help

Apple will NOT replace the screen for scratches. That's cosmetic damage and simply not covered under iPhone warranty. People have tried. The ONLY solution for anyone is to put a screen protector on their phone to avoid getting additional scratches.

My brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max does not "scratch as easily as my old iphones" ; it scratches WAY MORE EASILY...just touching the front ceramic screen with your fingers scratches it!

That is provably not true unless you have debris or grit on your finger that is harder than between 5 and 6 on the Mohs Hardness scale, as that is the tested hardness of the iPhone 12 Pro Max screen:

How could that be? Quartz even as a powder is one of the most common materials on earth, being present in most sand, gravel and other dirt particles.

However clean skin or even your fingernails alone would not scratch the screen.

That must be the problem, I’ve always had perfectly clean hands whenever I’ve used previous Apple phones but getting my new one coincided with starting work in the mine....

You’re trying to be funny here, but literally if your fingers had any type of dirt on them, that are statistically likely included quartz, which is hard enough to scratch a premium smartphone (Apple, Google, Samsung, etc.) screen.

I'm sorry you're upset about this, but expressing your dismay with me, who is a user just like you on this user to user ONLY forum is pointless.

Tell Apple how you feel --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple

I don't have any scratches on my phone. I put a screen protector on my phone before it was ever turned on. As I've done with every iPhone I've owned, except iPhone 6, which I unfortunately didn't do. And that phone in one year got all sorts of scratches. I learned my lesson with that. Only I didn't blame Apple, I blamed myself because I understand glass is glass and glass can be scratched.

BTW, your tire analogy doesn't work. You may be upset your phone has some cosmetic scratches, but it in no way renders your phone unusable inside or outside. Tires which couldn't be used outside would not be fit for use. A phone with cosmetic scratches works perfectly fine as it should. Pretty big difference.

Perhaps you'd prefer this analogy if you want a car analogy...........Not buying car insurance because you've never had an accident is akin to not putting a screen protector on a new phone because you've never scratched a phone's screen before.

I think I understand now. The glass must be softer now to prevent it from shattering. More shatterproof must mean more scratch-prone due to its being soft enough to have some elasticity and prevent shattering.

my tungsten carbide ring will not scratch. But it will shatter if dropped on ceramic tile.

i didn’t realize they changed the glass in such a fundamental way. Especially given all their advertising about the new, improved glass.

id rather have the older scratch proof glass over this softer shatterproof glass

Nope. You can use any words you like, but nothing changes the fact that iPhone screens can scratch and in particular, iPhone 12 is far less likely to shatter, yet it is not scratch-proof. That is NOT trolling. That is telling you fact. And it is FACT that installing a screen protector protects your phone from scratches.

I will not leave this thread. Did I somehow miss that you've purchased the forum? If you have, then you can tell everyone what they are allowed to say. But since I know you haven't, you can't ask me to leave anymore than I have the right to tell you what to do.

Have a nice evening buzzgary!

Nope, it's not. What solution do you think anyone here can offer you? Did you not read the terms of use you agreed to when you joined this forum? Do you not realize you are speaking ONLY with other users on this user to user forum? Apple isn't here. Apple isn't reading your complaints. Apple isn't going to respond to you. All Apple will do for you is sell you a screen protector to protect your phone. What do you think you are going to get from other users? We can do nothing for you. You can either put a screen protector on your phone to avoid future scratches. Or you can sell your phone and get something else. Complaining here is a total waste of your time.

If you want to complain to Apple, you certainly haven't here. Using this feedback link is the only way for you to get your message to Apple --> https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
