iPhone 12 pro scratched screen

I've only had my iPhone 12 pro for 3 days, haven't left the house & yet I already have significant scratches on the 'super strong' ceramic glass front screen! Anyone else experienced this? #notveryhappy

I had my IPhone X for over two years, and for the majority of that time I didn’t have a case or a screen protector. After a couple of years I definitely had a couple of scratches, but nothing major; it was so impressive! I got my iPhone 12 on release day and it hasn’t had any more than normal wear and tear that my X would go through. No drops, no cohabitation in pockets with keys, nothing like that - but I already have several significant scratches; easily as bad as anything on my 2+ year old X. I’m definitely disappointed; I’ve ordered a screen protector, and I’ll probably be ordering a case as well, but certainly the difference in performance between the X and the 12 seems pretty stark to me.

I am convinced that the deep scratch on my 12 pro max is from my sons fingernail, which may sound crazy but it’s the only “hard” object that has contacted this phone. Sounds like a lot of us are having the same issue after having the phone for only 1-3 days. I wonder what it’s going to be like in 6-12 months.

I can't imagine ANY Apple Store telling you this. Apple likely sells thousands of screen protectors EVERY day. We picked up our iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max in store this year. While I was waiting for each phone, just about every person who was getting a new phone was also having a screen protector installed at the store. We had them installed on both phones before they were ever turned on.

I have had my iPhone 12 Pro Max for LESS THAN 24 hours. Today it sat on my desk because my case and screen protector are being delivered this evening.

So when I tell you I BARELY used it all day and barely moved it around, I mean it. However, at one point I pick it up and all of a sudden there are scratches on the top and bottom of the screen. I am so extremely frustrated and confused.

I never dropped it or even slid it across the table or anything. I was SO careful with this thing. The only thing I can think of is that one of my rings touched it and scratched it BUT I've had my iPhone 6s Plus for 6 years now and it only has a few more scratches than this new phone.

WHAT THE HECK APPLE????????

What can I do??!?!?

Wow. I've had Belkin protectors on all our phones for the last few years and other than one of them needing to be replaced when the phone was dropped on concrete, we've never had an issue with them. We have them on our iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max since before they were even turned on.

Belkin is great about the lifetime guarantee though.

About "peddling" the same advice. What advice exactly would you suggest, since glass can scratch and Apple won't replace anyone's phone for getting scratched? Asking for a friend..........

A sock. Put your new iPhone in a sock.

Just messing with you man. You can see how many people are upset and frustrated, learning their new phones scratch too easily. In one of your post you mentioned a coating over the top that apple apply. Maybe we are all experiencing that winch is scratching??

Back to your question, my advice wouldn’t be any different to yours. It’s just that I’ve never liked screen protectors, actually I hated them. But now it seems we need them to protect these very delicate phones. Apple designs beautiful phones, and markets them by showing us the phones naked. We never get to enjoy them that way, unless we are using them in bed, holding it above a pillow encase it fell. Best phone I’ve ever had was the iPhone X. Dropped it from a roof, no issue, scrapped it agains tiles, no scratches. Just put the iPhone X screen on the 12, problem solved.

Yep!!! This new screen sucks the big one!!! It’s definitely worst than previous models... i tried replacement wt both Apple and my upgrade provider wt no luck.. ive placed a decent screen protector (what they call hybrid glass) to prevent future damage.. thats all we can do... im NOT happy, but still not returning my phone tho.. remember thats also a choice u can consider

Here's the problem with the iPhone X screen in comparison to the new screens. While you may not have shattered your screen, MANY MANY people did. The new Ceramic Shield screen on the 12 is 4 times harder to shatter and it's been tested by a lot of testers and validated as such. But they can't make a screen harder to shatter, which is equally harder to scratch. Physics hasn't reach that level yet. Personally, I'd rather spend a few dollars on a screen protector as opposed to hundreds of dollars replacing a shattered screen. The tradeoff is worth the price of the screen protector.

You were lucky with that drop.

If you go back to that era, there were many posts here from people asking how much it would cost to replace their shattered iPhone X screen.

(Currently it's $279.)

Now yes, people complain it scratches easily but the number of people asking how much it costs to replace a shattered screen is near zero.

Sorry about the screen protectors - but that's exactly why the iPhone glass is the way it is now; Belkin's protectors are designed to be scratch resistant, so they are hard and as a result crack easily.

Nope, but your sweatshirt pocket can easily carry micro-granules of sand and sand is quartz and quartz is harder than Mohs 7 on the Mohs scale and all iPhones can be scratched at levels higher than between Mohs 6 and 7.

This is why most people who put their phones in their jeans pockets are getting their phones scratched. Most jeans are stone washed to make them softer. The washing is most often with silica particles of sand (QUARTZ). There's no way the micro-granules of the material used to stone wash the jeans can be completely removed, even after repeated washing.

I know you're trying to demonstrate your phone's screen is defective. Sorry, you're failing.

I'm not trying to demonstrate anything? I'm sorry that you feel the need to sit behind your computer screen and belittle strangers.

If I'm paying $1200 for a phone, I should NOT be worried about MICRO-granules scratching my phone. Especially if that phone is being handled with extreme care. At this point, I've still had this phone for less than 48 hours.
