iPhone 12 not receiving group texts

Since upgrading from my iPhone X to IPhone 12 Pro I’ve noticed in a group text (SMS) that I’m randomly missing texts. My husband is in the group too so I can see I’m missing multiple texts at random. Anyone else having this issue?

I’ve been having issues ever since getting my new phone. I transferred the data from iPhone X to the 12 Pro. When you switch phones apparently the phone number did not settle and needs to be “reconnected”. T-Mobile support had me:

1. From the Home screen, tap Settings > Cellular (iPhone)

2. Tap Network Selection.

3. Slide the Automatic slider to the off position to start scanning for networks.

4. Select desired carrier (T-Mobile)

  1. Restart phone
  2. Settings > Messages > Turn on Send as SMS
  3. Click Sent & Receive
  4. Make sure the Number and Apple ID are listed and correct
  5. Remove the check on your phone number by tapping it. And select Remove.
  6. Now that it’s unchecked, tap to apply it again. This reconnects your phone.
  7. Done.
  8. So far so good

I've also had this issue since activating my iPhone 12 Pro. I took the route of NOT bringing over my old SIM card (because it wasn't compatible with T-Mobile 5G), and the setup software automatically provisioned the new SIM that came with the phone. I'm curious if everyone did that, or if there are a mix of people with this issue, some who installed their old SIM and some who allowed the setup routine to provision the new SIM card.

It’s also interesting that my Apple Watch (cellular version), MacBook Pro nor any of my iPads received the “missing messages”.

I have text forwarding on and they have all been consistent in mirroring message streams in my phone.

I called AT&T. They didn’t seem to have a mass record of callers with similar issues - but “reprovisioned” messaging... I restarted the phone, turned off Wi-Fi and the at&t rep said she’d call me later tonight to see if it’s fixed.

unsure if it is yet... 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hi Mike,

I've had the same experience. I was able to get a few people on android that I was having problems with and it got fixed..I think from a "re-provisioning" from Verizon. However, this didn't work for others that I still have problems with. Thus, I'm just assuming its not completely fixed...which either carrier or Apple knows what's really triggering this.

So, I'd advise you to possibly reach out to anyone you know who has android phones new and old..whatever carrier and continue to test to be completely satisfied of the "fix".

Hi Quinn,

I know there's alot of threads here to look over all of them.

But this issue has been so inconsistent. Its impossible to pinpoint the bottleneck here.

All kinds of Android phones, all kinds of carriers, but the most common denominator here is the iPhone 12/Pro.

What pains me to see is when there is a post about users who have this issue with previous iphones..That makes this issue a lot more harder to figure out. When I google this problem, there's posts from 3, 4, 5 yrs ago!! Lord!

But for now, its majority of the iPhone 12. And again, it doesn't matter the carrier, the android phones, 4G, 5G, Lte, etc....Some work, but most do not.

Sorry...

But as one person mentioned here, we as a group or team effort is to contact Apple for the most part to complain about this so that they know this is a major problem..1 or 2 calls from us is not going to cut it.

I'm experiencing the exact same problem. However, the texts that I don't receive come through much later, on a different day but at the same time they were originally sent, aside from the AM/PM difference. So a friend sent an MMS (green message) at 3:17pm and I didn't receive it until 3:17am. Same thing happened again today only the lag was exactly 48 hours. I'm curious to see what the resolution to this issue is.

I'm on iPhone 12 Pro, Sprint (T-Mobile now I suppose), primarily at home using WiFi.

Just wondering if anyone sees "outgoing" on top of a green bubble group conversation when you are having messaging issues? Here are the facts that I have gathered so far:

  • When I am out of the house in a strong 5G signal, I dont see "outgoing" and I dont have messaging issues.
  • When I get home and go in my basement, where I have 2 bars of signal and wifi on, I occasionally see the "outgoing" header where the # of people usually are. I never see this when I am out of the house on a strong 5G signal.
  • It is at home when I am missing messages. Although I have to admit it has worked better over the last few days.
  • I am wondering if the issue has to do with some kind of wifi/5G switching issue? Or a weaker 5G signal having an issue? See below for the "outgoing" header.

I know it’s a lot to read we have what now?? 22 pgs of this topic now and growing...even though people are slightly seeing different things, the common denominator here is the iPhone...I can’t rule out the carriers, but the issue with not just MMS, but single one to one SMS txt messages from Android users that can’t be retrieved is the MAIN issue here. Android users are seeing are messages and replying, but iPhone users can not retrieve it!

They're also has been some work arounds but it’s not been 100%.

After taking some recommendations from some of you, I’ve been able to fix this on a case by case basis..My personal experience has been as such; new android phones no issue..Older android models still an issue.

The fact remains that I still believe this will have to be a collaborative effort with the carriers and Apple ASAP!!

I have this issue as well, and it’s becoming infuriating. A few group threads that I’m on have become a garbled, nonsensical mess on iPhone 12 Pro AND my iPad Pro.

Things I have tried, all to no avail:

-Update to 14.2 (18B92) on iPhone and iPad

-Restart of both devices

-Made sure MMS is turned on (also turned it OFF for a day and back ON)

-Tried changing “you can receive messages to and reply from” to include my email address, and mobile number, back and forth

-Turned off text forwarding to my iPad, and turned back on

-Send as SMS turned off, eventually turned back on

-Group messaging turned off, then on after

Just adding to the count: same issue. iPhone 12 Pro, Verizon, 14.2.

I have tried signing out of icloud, turning off imessage, resetting network settings, deleting the threads, turning off 5G. Nothing has worked. I have a friend with the same equipment, software and carrier as me who is getting all of the texts i'm not, thankfully he's keeping me in the loop. Since I'm having the issue and he isn't, and all of our variables are the same, makes it very difficult to know where the issue lies.

Nov 11, 2020 8:12 AM in response to luws1

Sorry luws1, I did follow up on another thread indicating that I still can't get txt messages from a co-worker. He's using a Blackberry Keyone from Verizon.

And I'm still looking thru everyone's responses/threads here, everything has been a temporary fix done by 10 different ways to fix this issue from a case by case scenario...kind of tells you something doesn't it?

Ultimately, individually if we have found a temp fix..you won't see threads from those people thinking that's been completely resolved...however, I guarantee you will later.

And as I mentioned about 3 or 4 times. Apple must work with the carriers in identifying the bottleneck and just hope that Apple will come up with a permanent fix in its next update. But at the same time, if we continue to call our carriers, Apple, the faster Apple will take notice that this is a country wide or possibly world wide major issue.

Nov 11, 2020 9:23 AM in response to Cardey

Same here. On Verizon with iP 12 Pro. Same issues. Same attempts at fixing - turning on and off SMS, iMessage, 5G (which is pure garbage in Atlanta anyway), installing Verizon Message+, latest iOS 14.1 then 14.2, etc. nothing. Same issues.

I should have kept my iPhone X. Which was running iOS 14.1 on same Verizon service -- and not one issue.

THIS IS NOT VERIZON. THIS IS AN IPHONE 12 PRO ISSUE THAT APPLE IS NOT ACKNOWLEDGING OR FIXING. OWN UP TO IT AND FIX IT, APPLE.

And now you want me to be the Guinea pig for your new apple chips on new hardware? No thanks. I think I’ll wait a few years for the expected issues to be resolved.

How does a problem that plagued Apple in earlier iPhone hardware make it through QA testing? Jobs would be firing people all over the place.
