iPhone 12 not receiving group texts

Since upgrading from my iPhone X to IPhone 12 Pro I’ve noticed in a group text (SMS) that I’m randomly missing texts. My husband is in the group too so I can see I’m missing multiple texts at random. Anyone else having this issue?

Yes, I have been having the same issue since upgrading, however I have the iPhone 12. My phone also says I have left the conversation on every group text on my phone, which I know is not the case. I've called Apple a few times and they say its just carrier issue. There are posts on MacRumors about this same issue. I do not believe this is a carrier issue if it's happening to multiple people.

Trust me on this one, totally not Verizon. I have spent hours on with both of them. Finally Verizon gave me a work around and a way to prove that it is Apple not Verizon. Install the Verizon Message Plus app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/message/id621469412

It is their texting app, just like your native Apple texting app. It isn't as nice but it does work, you should be able to group text on it and send media to Android phones. Give it a try. Let me know if it works. Still doesn't solve the problem with the Apple Texting app which is annoying.

Well, I wouldn’t say it solves the problem. iPhones were meant to work with iMessages. So, having to turn off such an integral function of an iPhone just to be able to receive SMS group text messages is really just a temporary workaround.

The best way to finally get this fully fixed is if everyone who writes into this forum will send a bug report to Apple at the following address…

https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Be sure to put your iOS version in the subject field, because the drop-down for iOS versions doesn’t include iOS 14.2 or later. Leave the drop-down box blank.

Okay, here's the latest:

  1. Apple support basically wanted to reset my phone and I told them that has been done by everyone here with no luck.
  2. Apple support told me to call my carrier (Verizon) and have them "reprovision" the phone/acct?
  3. And can now retrieve messages from android users that I had problems with before.

Note: For verizon folks, yes the workaround by having them turn on "integrated message service" and downloading the Verzion's Message+ app works. The caviet is that you have duplicate messages and notifications from both message+ and iMessage. Turn off notificaiton with message+ and continue to use iMessage. Do this if the reprovisioning of your acct w/Verizon does not work. Sorry, don't know what to do with AT&T and T-Mobile users.

I will continue to test this with other Android users and let this group know if anything changes.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I'm in the same boat:

  • Got my 12 Pro on launch day (10/23)
  • Verizon
  • Came with iOS 14.1

Thankfully my bf is in a number of group chats with me. Messages were being received in group chats (mixed and iPhone) inconsistently. Apple tried twice over chat, Verizon over chat twice and in person once. SIM has been replaced, resets of phone, network settings, you name it, so many times I lost count.

A Verizon Tier 2 Tech almost fixed it, bur 2 days later, back to random missing messages. Have an Apple appointment and plan to have them check hardware anyway (it won't be that, I know), but I have Apple tech in chat saying to replace my phone if it can't be fixed.

Not sure that will fix the issue (probably not), but this is infuriating. My brother got a 12 Pro and not sure if he's having the same issues we are.

Hi All! So, good news on my iPhone 12 pro. Again this may not work for everyone, but after I read a few of the messages here and what they did to make it work from some of you, I thought I'd give it a shot. And again, this is no excuse for Apple to be aloof on this issue. Its insane that we need to do this and even more insane that Apple has no idea!..nor the carriers.

I have also seen some of you saying that you have this issue with previous iPhone models...thats even more insane. Perhaps the following steps may work for you, or maybe not, but its worth the shot esp if you are a Verizon customer.

My apologies, not sure what to do for AT&T and T-Mobile iphone users...This is just for Verizon customers.

My Phone: iPhone 12 pro w/Verizon, My Cellular setting: 5G auto, Data Roaming OFF, and Data Mode is set to "allow more data on 5G". And I'm on the top plan..I forgot what that plan name is..not sure if that makes any difference et all.

*NOTE: You may have your Wifi settings on or off.

Steps:

  1. Removed my entire group, and single (one on one) txt messages history to those people I had issues with in receiving txt messages with from Android users.
  2. Downloaded "message+" from Verizon. Enable it and go thru the motions of starting the app. This apparently enables a feature called "Integrated Message Service" on your phone. Close out of message+.
  3. Disable notifications in your iphone settings for "message+" so that you only use iMessage (iPhone built-in). Don't be too concerned about duplicate messages..the size is minimal.
  4. Turn off iMessage in your message setting
  5. Shut down your phone and wait for 2-3 min, then take out your SIM card
  6. Wait about 1 min, power up the phone. You will see a message on your phone that there is no SIM card..thats okay.
  7. Wait about 1 min, turn on iMessage, wait about 30 seconds.
  8. Turn off the phone and wait 1 min.
  9. Reinsert the SIM card and wait 1 min.
  10. Power up the phone
  11. Wait about 1-2 min till the phone is completely in recognition that the SIM card is on and you may even turn on the WiFi.
  12. Begin to test again with those Android users..esp if you know friends, family, co-workers who have older Android models and again, it does NOT matter which carrier you or your Android users are on...Hopefully you'll start seeing their messages.

Please test with several people..Do not be satisfied just because one android user works.

Update:

Still testing with other Android phone users...I need to be absolutely sure.

Only one person who has a Blackberry Keyone w/Verizon and NOT receiving his txt's. I do know that the newer Blackberry phones are running Android. Oh well!

But now "working" on the following Android phones:

  1. Google Pixel 2 w/verizon
  2. Samsung S9 w/AT&T
  3. Google Pixel (original) w/verizon
  4. Google Pixel 2 XL w/T-Mobile
  5. Samsung s10 w/AT&T
  6. Samsung s10 w/Verizon

I saw this from user Timult on Nov 10, 2020. It makes the most sense. We’ll see.

this has to do with settling the phone number.

1. From the Home screen, tap Settings > Cellular (iPhone)

****I had to turn off Cellular Data first ***

2. Tap Network Selection.

3. Slide the Automatic slider to the off position to start scanning for networks.

4. Select desired carrier (T-Mobile)

*** Turn Cellular Data back on ****

  1. Restart phone
  2. Settings > Messages > Turn on Send as SMS
  3. Click Sent & Receive
  4. Make sure the Number and Apple ID are listed and correct
  5. Remove the check on your phone number by tapping it. And select Remove.
  6. Now that it’s unchecked, tap to apply it again. This reconnects your phone.
  7. Done.

I was getting reg text messages and iMessages sent to me just fine. I was having group texts (iPhone/apple device users) some of their replies not showing up on my iPhone 12 pro max. I did see it on my mac, but not being reflected on the phone. if you have AT&T, do the following and it has helped me with my missing group text messages to show up. Please note, I can't verify this will be a solution but something that did for me.

  • When I first noticed this issue, I immediately reset network settings, rebooted my phone , but I don't think that did anything. Then I noticed under Messages > send & receive, the receive was marked under my iCloud email for some reason instead of my number, so I changed it then rebooted.

  • Next day, I did some group chat to test, and one responses didn't get logged on the phone but did on the mac. I did chat support with AT&T and they said that all carriers has an internal tool to fix issues like this. The agent did something on their end to rectify and then was told to reboot my phone. Since then, responses has been coming through. However the earlier 1 message response I saw on my Mac still didn't show up the iPhone (not a big deal).

  • I texted some people separately outside the group text to start sending messages and I saw their responses finally.

  • I opened a case to the Apple support team, since I wanted to have them log this issue. It got escalated to the Eng team now.

So far so good as far as I can tell at the moment but who knows. I hope this helps someone.

that statement is 100% false, sorry....this is Apple's issue as it's an iMessage issue. Three points of fact to back this up.

  1. Apple just a couple weeks ago released a patch to help fix this issue (to no avail).
  2. if you go into settings and turn off iMessage, this problem goes away. I have no issue sending or receiving messages from Android users after I turn it off....but iMessage doesn't use data so it's an EXTREMELY important feature.
  3. it's not ATT v. Verizon v. Sprint etc....it only happens between Apple and Android and it's across ALL carriers, emphatically proving, iMessage and a cross platform issue, not carrier.
