iPhone 12 not receiving group texts

Since upgrading from my iPhone X to IPhone 12 Pro I’ve noticed in a group text (SMS) that I’m randomly missing texts. My husband is in the group too so I can see I’m missing multiple texts at random. Anyone else having this issue?

I’ve been having issues ever since getting my new phone. I transferred the data from iPhone X to the 12 Pro. When you switch phones apparently the phone number did not settle and needs to be “reconnected”. T-Mobile support had me:

1. From the Home screen, tap Settings > Cellular (iPhone)

2. Tap Network Selection.

3. Slide the Automatic slider to the off position to start scanning for networks.

4. Select desired carrier (T-Mobile)

  1. Restart phone
  2. Settings > Messages > Turn on Send as SMS
  3. Click Sent & Receive
  4. Make sure the Number and Apple ID are listed and correct
  5. Remove the check on your phone number by tapping it. And select Remove.
  6. Now that it’s unchecked, tap to apply it again. This reconnects your phone.
  7. Done.
  8. So far so good

I also am missing random texts from group messages and also sending to groups can take 5 or 6 attempts. I did find if I turn off group messaging and back on then send it works and sends quickly.

I've moved my SIM from the 12 to my X which I still have and it seems to be working fine, fast sends and no missed messages.

Hope this will be resolved soon so I can move back to my 12. Today is the last day for me to return it, which this issue made me consider. Fingers crossed a fix is imminent.

I tried the steps one user posted a couple of days ago that Verizon gave him where I reset my network settings. So far it’s working as I tested a group chat with the same bunch of guys I originally had the issue with and have not had an issue since.

here’s what I did:

1) go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

2) Then power cycle your phone (even if it does after you reset network)

3) Create a group chat with 3-5 friends.

4) in the group chat text, ask each of them to text reply you back once they receive your text.

5) if they all receive it, that’s a good sign. Keep an eye on it going forward.

I upgraded from an iPhone X to iPhone 12 Pro. I’m on AT&T

I'm pretty sure it's not related to 5G. I have a 12 Pro, but my AT&T plan doesn't have 5G, so my phone doesn't even have a Setting option for switching to 5G. So, I'm fully on LTE only. Yet, I am still having all of the problems reported in this thread.

The best thing for anyone to do at this point is report this "missing group texts" issue to the Apple Feedback website as a bug report...

https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

And, in your feedback comments, be sure to also include various news article links such as the following...

https://www.imore.com/some-iphone-12-owners-are-missing-text-messages-group-chats

https://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone-12-messages-bug-3797519/

https://www.techtimes.com/artichttps://macnews.me/2020/11/06/some-iphone-12-owners-are-missing-text-messages-in-group-chats/

And, in the dropdown on the bug feedback page, be aware that they don't even have iOS 14.2 as an option, so be sure to put "iOS 14.2" in the subject field of your bug report.

The more reports they get, the better the chances of this issue being fixed.

Doesn’t seem to be working for everyone but reset all network settings seemed to help me at least temporarily for one text chain I’ve been testing it on. I had to reset the network settings on both my phone and my wife’s. We both have iPhone 12 pros and are using iOS 14.2. There is one person on the chain with a non apple phone that seems to be causing the issue. Not sure how long this temp fix will last. Quite frustrating to say the least. And apple support was useless. All they say is call my carrier. I try to explain it is across all carriers, etc but I am just wasting time.

Me too! Although it’s not just the iPhone 12. This happened after upgrading to iOS 14 when I still had my iPhone 11. I erased all the group threads that had Android users in them and then it seemed to have stopped like there was something weird stuck in the thread from the previous iOS. I just got the iPhone 12 pro max and it’s happening again. I’m gonna do the same thing and erase those threads and start over from new on those groups. Maybe something weird passed over from the transfer from one phone to another...? I think this is an iOS 14 issue and not device specific though since it happened to me on the 11 right after the iOS 14 upgrade. Have there been any solutions or is Apple aware of this??

Yes it already appears there’s a fix in 14.3, I’ve had no problem since installing it. I hope tomorrow I can say the same thing though! Of all functions to botch up from a lack of testing, iMessage is probably most commonly used by millions of people, how could they not test this...?! It’s infuriating. I’ve emailed Tim Cook twice, no response from him or his staff, they don’t care! A Catalina software update destroyed my Mac Air laptop which was barely a yr old!! I’ve almost had enough of Apple; if my iPad is destroyed from a s/w update, that will be the end of me being an Apple customer! Sorry for my rant!

Just reposting what I and some other users believe is a fix:

I also have had no missed texts since I downloaded the 14.3 public beta,, did a hard reboot, and reset network settings. Been 5 days now so I am pretty optimistic that this is at last solved........

I haven't seen anyone report having more problems after installing 14.3 -- the hard reboot and reset network settings probably isn't necessary, but obviously can't hurt.......................

Well, I wouldn’t say it solves the problem. iPhones were meant to work with iMessages. So, having to turn off such an integral function of an iPhone just to be able to receive SMS group text messages is really just a temporary workaround.

The best way to finally get this fully fixed is if everyone who writes into this forum will send a bug report to Apple at the following address…

https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Be sure to put your iOS version in the subject field, because the drop-down for iOS versions doesn’t include iOS 14.2 or later. Leave the drop-down box blank.

Hey, I worked on this issue all night after just switching to my very first iPhone. I had a pixel previously, and as soon as I switched phones I wasn't receiving any messages from about half my contacts. Turns out, that if your phone number is being used on google - it will hold some messages hostage from getting to your new device.

So, if you can, go to your google account and remove your phone number in the settings area - from there - restart your device and see what happens.

Theres a good chance this will fix it.

Got a brand new Iphone 12 yesterday. I can send text messages to my wife (who owns a pixel4a) but when she replies I don't get her messages (it's not a notification problem, I simply don't get any messages from her).

When I send messages to the iphone from my professional mobile phone (a samsung), I receive them (with notification) consistently.

When I installed whatsapp on the iphone12 I received the verification text message as well. And I received messages commercial messages from my provider (Orange) last night. So, it looks like I receive messages from most of my contacts, but I can't get messages from others (again, not a notification problem, but a reception problem). That's weird.

I upgraded to 14.3 last night to no avail.

I made a full reset (settings + content) this morning and reinstalled from scratch, didn't solve the problem

either.

I've called Apple Support, shared my screen, send them analysis data, they made some remote investigation and

asked me to open a case at my provider, and then come back to them with the case number so that Apple could call Orange and investigate further.

I'll make a last try and reset the phone with a new appleid to check if it helps.

I'll try to turn off Imessage on my ipad pro and look if it makes things better, as some seem to have solved the issue like that.

Very disappointed to have problems without such a basic - but very important - feature :-(
