Magic mouse lagging and jerky on Mac Mini

My Apple mice (two different ones) are lagging and jerky intermittently on a Mac mini. I have turned off other devices that might be interfering, I have swapped the mouse, I do not have wifi turned on, the mouse batteries are fine, I have turned off the Mac Mini etc.

So, it appears the problem is between the mouse and the Mac Mini. Can anyone help?

My old Magic Mouse also periodically starts to lag (the offending USB flash drive and USB drivedock disconnected, fresh batteries, only Ethernet, reboot, SMC & PRAM reset, safe-boot, Disk First Aid OK).

I fix it by turning the mouse off/on and then it works fine.

The newer Magic Keyboard works OK (if those offending interfering USB devices are disconnected. I have a cheap wired mouse if I use those devices for a longer time) so I have suspected that a newer generation Magic Mouse might work better.
