Command-Shift-5 lets you drag the boundaries where you want them, refining the area as many times as needed. The capture only occurs when you press Return or click the Capture button in the floating bar at the bottom. In that same floating bar, you can click Options and set the destination to the Clipboard (or wherever else you want the screenshot to go).

That's cool way to set the boundary, but I usually want to copy screenshot to clipboard for paste (ctrl + shift + cmd - 4). I liked the three finger approach that doesn't work on my new macbook air as you could drag, lift your fingers if you hit the edge of the trackpad, and then drag some more to set the boundary. Having to press and hold the click means if you have to lift, the screenshot executes. I prefer the old system. Is there a way to alter the behavior in some setting?
Command-Shift-5.
