"Show Desktop" gesture working but not really

When I do "Show Desktop" gesture, I see the desktop just like normal - all the windows scatter off to the edges of the screen, and I can see files on the desktop - but I'm not able to access them with the cursor! I've been doing this exact same thing on all my previous macbooks and this is the first time I've seen this.

Thank you, but that is not helpful. I feel like you didn't understand my issue. The trackpad is working fine for me and I understand the gestures, etc. The problem is, when I do the "Show Desktop" gesture - the gesture works perfectly - I see the desktop and all the files on the desktop, but I can't access them with the cursor.

If it is not working as expected try a Safeboot to clear system cache files—

SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, including dynamic loader cache,  etc.

Login and test. Reboot  as normal and test.  Caches get rebuilt automatically.

If no resolve, reinstall the macOS on top of your existing macOS for a refreshed copy:
