I have an iphone 6, running ios 12.4.8. when i play apple music it keeps repeating the song. the control button to turn repeat on and off is nowhere to be found. The shuffle button is there, and it works. Any suggestions?

Are you sure you don't have a small repeat button next to shuffle? I'm not sure if you only found big shuffle button when opening an album or playlist that's next to Play button, or indeed the default shuffle button.
Nevertheless, tap on that small three line button.
Then check if that button is disabled. If it has a pink box around it it means it's on repeat.
Right. I didn’t notice it was about iOS 12. In tgat case just scroll down instead of pressing three dots and you’ll see your Up Next list. On the same line there’ll be Shuffle and Repeat buttons.
