iPhone Keeps Randomly Crashing, Rebooting, and Showing Extreme Battery Drain

After updating to iOS 14.0.1, my iPhone 7 Plus keeps randomly crashing, rebooting and then showing 10% battery, after being at close to 100%. Why is this happening, and what is Apple doing to fix it??? At this time, you can't go into an actual Apple Store for repairs because of Covid. Good luck getting ahold of anyone on the phone that can actually help. Is this Apple's way to force people to buy the new iPhone 12??? My phone has been perfect and battery typically lasts a day and a half on consistent use, Now has to be plugged in and charing 24/7, and still randomly crashes and reboots. Isn't this how the last class action lawsuit against Apple started?? I have screen shots of several crashes and reboots. This needs to be fixed IMMEDIATELY!!!

Please don't force me to go to a Android phone!!

2020-11-02 UPDATE:

I updated the firmware last night before bed. It sat on the charger all night long and was at 100% when removing. I made sure that no apps were running in the background, and got ready for work (maybe 10 minutes). Still at 100%, I went to text my wife, and the phone crashed and rebooted. Once back up and running, the battery said 10%. I captured a screen shot, and then I manually rebooted the phone. Back up to 99%. (See below)

The iOS update to 14.1 didn't fix anything. :-(

I am honestly tired of people telling me that my battery is bad, and I need to take it in for service.

*None of these issue were present prior to iOS update to 14.0.1.

*Battery health didn't say SERVICE on it prior to update.

*No Apple Stores around me with 100 miles accepting appointments.

*I use my phone for work, so mailing it in is not an option.

*Funny how more than 1000 people are experiencing the very same issue, and some of them have brand new phones.

***Unless you are an Apple Representative and have a REAL solution, please keep your comments to yourself.

***I work in IT, I have an advanced education. I'm not an idiot, and have done countless hours of research and troubleshooting.

***If I could go back to my previous iOS before all this happened, I would!!!

Please read the entire thread before commenting. Some of you have some really good information. Many of you key-board know-it-alls just add to the frustration, without really solving any issues as all.

Battery capacity isn’t necessarily relevant. If the battery was installed improperly or the wrong type of battery was involved, that could trigger the “service” indicator also.

I know it’s difficult with stores being closed to get serviced.

Have you tried updating the phone again? You mentioned iOS 14.0.1 earlier which has since been replaced by 14.1. According to Apple the latter contains numerous bug fixes and improvements which could help.

missterius,

Definitely let me know how it goes. I will await the results.

Try to remember that the iPhone is NOT a phone but a portable and extremely powerful hand held S.M.A.R.T. computer. It is an extremely complicated device that does everything we need it to, we want it to, and we never thought about it ever doing. We could be dragging around a laptop, a phone, game console, books, boom box, cd’s, calendars, etc... OR an iPhone. Yes, I had a difficult time adapting to the iPhone, my first Apple product ever, because it had little annoying bugs I felt offended that Apple expected me to put up with. But I ended up absolutely addicted to every one of my iPhones and don’t know what I would do with out it. I absolutely trust and respect Apple and it’s devices. It is everything I need in one tiny little amazing hand held device. And in my opinion, Apple’s iPhones are un-rivaled. So yes, you have the right to be frustrated but remember what it actually does for us and as I had to do... we have to stop expecting perfection from a fluid , constantly growing, always increasing in amazing functions, and abilities in an extremely powerful device. Let’s give Apple the appreciation and break it truly deserves. Plus you have to respect a company that created a forum where it’s users can vent about IT and still provide the help to the frustrated, from a large community to address issues you are having with THE company’s product. Hang in there... powerful technology deserves our participation in making it better. We are here to help you do just that. But yes, you have every right to be upset, angry, irritated, frustrated... but not for too long because you need help in figuring out your phones particular personality quirks. We were here to help. 😎 Hang in there!

I don't expect perfection, but I do expect something to be thoroughly tested prior to releasing to the public. I've been in IT and a consultant for many years, and if any of my clients ever experienced anything like this, we would be expected to fix it immediately. I'm probably just blowing off steam.... I will likely buy the 12 Pro Max when it comes out, just because I have always had the latest tech from Apple... Spec-ing out my new MBP as we speak.

Apple’s software Quality Assurance has definitely gone downhill recently. Even though I’ve had no battery issues, iOS 13 and 14 have both been riddled with bugs from the start.

This is why I generally wait till minor updates are released before moving up to a new software version just to escape the worst of it. Things should improve with time.

mistterius,

I absolutely agree with you. I completely understand your frustration. As I have posted in response to someone else, I come from the hard drive microcontroller firmware development arena. Our product functionality requirements are extremely high and testing is an intensely vast process and no firmware goes out with out a 100% score on every test. Yes, customers would instantaneously flee if our devices did not securely protect their data integrity. Apple iPhones are a very different animal that it took me years to adapt to its reality. Apple, in my opinion, is always producing so many different feature that are truly meaningful, always giving us more operations, abilities at a scale and rate that is actually hard to keep up with. The by product of which are bugs and that is the Apple realm of reality. But I absolutely understand your position and frustration.

Even if you are tired of hearing it, your battery is bad. Those are the symptoms of a failing battery with high internal resistance. And I have read the whole thread, several times over, and that doesn’t change the fact that your battery is bad. You can use the Contact Support link at the top of this page, where a technician can run a remote diagnostic, and then she can tell you that your battery is bad rather than other users telling you that your battery is bad, but that doesn’t change the fact that your battery is bad.

Mistterius,

I am NO expert just an iPhone 11, iOS 14.1 user. My phone has the intermittent issue where I will have my phone charging all night just to show only 10% charged when it had a a higher charge before I connected it to charge. It happened when I woke up yesterday morning.

I have not experienced the serious consequences you have because I have the Apple iPhone 11 SMART battery case on my iPhone. When my battery is at 10% charged in the mornings after charging all night, it has drained the entire SMART battery(which I’ve never been able to drain by just use) and the iPhones battery except for the 10%.

When this happens, I have to remove the battery pack from the phone and charge them independently but the iPhone still shows problems trying to charge. Yesterday I went through all the steps turn off background app refresh, close all .... . I kept watching the battery charging in the upper right corner of the screen and it was flickering between white and barely viable green. I could explain why I did what I did next but who cares, anyhow I turned cellular off(don’t ask why) then just kept pulling power from the phone and plugging it back in. I watched the battery in the corner and after the 4th time the battery in the corner showed green and charging. It charged quickly and is fine again till it happens again.

Now, I am NOT saying that ‘Cellular’ being turned off had ANYTHING AT ALL to do with alleviating the battery issue NOR am I saying that ‘Cellular’ being ON caused or contributed to the issue. SO please DONT feel there need to school me on how utterly ridiculous and ignorant I am because I am NOT even insinuating that ‘Cellular’ being OFF or ON at the time, played any role what so ever in the causation of or the resolution of my battery NOT charging. Just stating the steps, trial and error, I took.

Great advice. Perhaps you can also tell me why there was not one single problem with my phone prior to the update.... Because you can't. Battery health was perfect prior to update. But whatever... You win. You are a GOD. If I could revert back to the previous iOS I would prove it to you, and you'd see that I'm not just bitching to bitch and complain about something...

I totally understand where you're coming from. But if you talk to any of the technician-wanna-bes here, they will tell you that your battery is bad. That seems to be the default answer. I have a friend that just got the 12 Max Pro, and has already replaced it twice because of the iOS update that "ISN'T" the problem. I, myself, have succumbed to the need for a reliable device, and since I can write it off on my business expense, I just went with it and bought the new 12 Max Pro, and so far, so good. I will not be doing any of the iOS updates until I do some research on the updates prior to installing them. I hope you get the opportunity to read my entire thread of frustrations on this. Kind of make a person wonder how many times thing have to go down the legal road before something actually gets fixed.

Hi mistterius,

I do NOT agree with those who jump to the problem being a bad battery. Some few cases could very well be due to battery issues BUT the vast majority of these extreme battery drainage issues are NOT due to bad battery. I believe this is a HARDWARE issue but it could just as well be a software issue-possibly tied to the power commands/states. I am confident that a far greater number of people KNOW this is a real issue that replacing the battery will NOT fix.

Dec 15, 2020 5:29 PM in response to mistterius

Well, to all you know-it-alls on this thread... I had the battery replaced last week (by Apple), and guess what?? NOTHING changed. Still has ALL of the same symptoms, including battery status "SERVICE". So what do y'all have now??? NOTHING!! You know nothing!! All you've manage to do is contribute to the frustration and give other false hope. Congratulations, YOU are part of the problem!!

Dec 16, 2020 1:13 PM in response to mistterius

Hi mistterius,

I don’t know much but I did know a new battery would do nothing at all to fix the problems you are having. Yes, this community is made up of regular users who have knowledge to share, advice to give, opinions to present, passion behind their theories regarding issues, etc... but mainly we are here to help and get help with iPhones. You have 100000 people, you could receive 100000 different opinions. It’s frustrating to have so many different points of views and opinions regarding one issue and that is what we do here. We present you with a number of viable options to pursue towards fixing your issue AND you get to root through them all till you decide which one you will attempt first. There are NO guarantees or warranties on this site, that with our help, your issues will be resolved. All we agree to do is TRY to help the best that we can. So, now it’s a fact that your battery WAS not the problem, you know that because many took the time to present their opinions and replacing the battery won as the next thing to do. So, what will you try now?

Dec 16, 2020 5:42 PM in response to Ceci-Tigre

I do understand your point, and genuinely appreciate the input from REAL people that are not centered around one specific root cause. If you look through the comments of this entire thread, I can't count the number of time I was told with out a doubt that it was a battery issue, and that the battery had to be replaced. Even though, I had screen shots proving that none of the issues were present prior to the iOS update. That's that part that made me entirely furious. As a professional, I was here to merely seek a viable resolution for people that claim to know the product better than most. What I actually found was a bunch of keyboard warriors that thought they had valuable information to contribute. But again, as you said, they were sharing their opinions. It's great to have an opinion, but when it becomes a one track conversation, it becomes very counter productive. As for the next steps, I will wait to see how Apple plans to handle the situation that hundreds of thousands of iPhone owners. Once a truly viable solution is released by Apple, I will apply the solution to my device and hope for the best. I will however, be very cautious with my new 12 Max Pro before installing.
