I can still see all of my gmail folders (labels) when I log in to gmail on web browser. but they've disappeared from my mail app that I use on my macbook
i synchronzied accounts and it didn't make them appear

I also have this issue. When signing into Gmail on a new MacBook setup, I get an abundance of old mail, old spam and my current Google security alerts.
Nothing else is showing up. It's not synchronizing mail, or labels, or anything useful.
I've checked IMAP settings in Gmail - all is as it should be.
No amount of changes in preferences, reloading the Mail app, or rebooting the computer has any positive effect.
Please, someone tell me how to make Apple Mail work with Gmail.
BTW, smart mailboxes are dumb as sh*t.
