iOS only shows/plays MOSTLY clean songs, while the same playlist or album on desktop iTunes is all explicit

My iPhone XS with iOS 14.1 plays and shows mostly the clean version of songs, while browsing/playing the same playlist or album in desktop iTunes on my Macbook Pro has the explicit versions. For example, the Rap Life playlist shows 8 explicit songs (out of 100) on iOS, while all 100 songs are shown as explicit in iTunes.

I'm signed into both iOS and iTunes with the same user account, no content restrictions on either device, and I've never had problems with playing explicit songs in the past...what's going on!? How can I get the explicit songs on iOS??

Hi eburbeck,

We'd recommend disabling Content & Privacy Restrictions completely before testing again with the explicit songs. You can turn it off in Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Hello eburbeck,

We understand you do not have explicit songs on your iPhone, but they show on your computer. We'd love to help. First, can you tell us if you search for the song on your iPhone, does it show an explicit version that has not been downloaded? Also, if you play the current version that is in the library does it play the explicit version even though the explicit indicator does not show? Also, let's double check and make sure the Content and Privacy feature is turned off on the iPhone using the steps here: Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

I already tested with that configuration as well and the issue persists. For what it’s worth, Apple Music Support has opened a case for this issue, so it’s possible there’s a bug (and not anything you can suggest that would resolve the issue).

Hi Karina,

If I search for an explicit song that isn't in my library (or downloaded), the search results show ONLY the clean version.

If I have both versions (clean and explicit) downloaded and in my library, playing either version plays the selected version as expected - the clean version has no explicit lyrics in the audio content, and the explicit version DOES play explicit lyrics.

Finally, I have confirmed many times that content restrictions are disabled / set to allow explicit.
