iPad Air 4 Battery Drain

Hi, I got an iPad air for drawing and the battery has been draining very quickly when the screen is off, almost as if the screen was still on. The only app I have is procreate and I have a apple pencil 2 paired with it. Any help would be appreciated.

As an update to my post a couple of weeks ago I got a new unit from the Apple store as a replacement because my compass sensor was broken. Apple refused to take it back or officially acknowledge the battery had an issue but because the compass was broken I was able to walk out of the store with a replacement unit in hand. The replacement is working great, couldn’t be happier. I am 100% convinced that a some sort of hardware issue was at fault. Maybe the broken compass sensor was drawing power when it was not supposed to or something. If you are having this issue I would recommend to push for a replacement, best of luck!

Also experiencing same problem as everyone on this thread. I bought the standard ipad for my son few weeks before i got my ipad air. The standard ipad drains less than 1% / 24hrs in standby with background activities, bluetooth and wifi enabled. Air drains several % / 24hrs. I would estimate i get 4-5 hrs web browsing on the air from a full charge. Standard ipad probably the promised 10 hrs. Compared video streaming and air consumed ~20% more battery. 🙁

Hi SoupLauncher.... Seems like Apple doesn't think there's problem even though we are easily seeing battery problems when our units are turned off.. Time will tell when Apple finally acknowledges the issues we are reporting. No idea if it's an iPadOS problem or an actual battery problem. I am an electrical engineer so I know that we shouldn't see these sorts of battery drop issues with brand new units with Lithium Ion batteries when the units aren't even turned on.

My iPad Air 4 is wifi only. When I am actually using my iPad for work (which is most of the time the iPad is being used), wifi and bluetooth are OFF so only the screen is on and nothing else is running in the background (all apps are closed except for the single app that is open and being used by me)... yet the battery still drains.

How many of you others with the same battery drain problem have contacted Apple support to report your battery problems?

It is funny I also have an iPad Pro 2 and using iOS 14.2, 256gb, wifi only and there is no battery drainage... use for 3 or 4 hours non stop on internet, reading etc and my battery drops only 12/15% ——- When using iPad Air 4, same usage and battery is down to 45/50% so please don’t tell me that there is no problem on iPad Air 4 Please someone at Apple correct this problem paying 1000.00$ can for an iPad I expect better results

I erred above.. the Apple Store tech reverted back to a fresh copy of 14.2, not to 14.0 as stated above; v. 14 is no longer signed by Apple, therefore, it is no longer available. I did try to downgrade to 14.1 (I was able to download the image file on my computer) but keep running into errors in Tunes when I try to install it. Oh well.. guess I'll leave things at 14.2 and see what happens.

(Incidentally, is there a way to edit a prior post? I see no way to edit one of my prior posts.. odd that that wouldn't be an option.)

Thanks for the advice. I was in touch with them this morning and have to wait for an adapter so I can backup the iPad and reset it it to factory settings and start again. I told them if that didn't work, I would be seeking a replacement and they said that would be the next step.

I advised that I'd turned off pretty well anything that took up power, apps in the background, notifications, brightness etc etc. But it still lost 10% overnight last night when off.

I've also drained the battery as someone suggested in this thread, and am now re-charging to see if that helps as I have to wait a week for the USB-A to USB-C adapter to arrive. My iMac is old and although I got a new hard drive and upgraded RAM and it runs beautifully, it doesn't have the right port for either my iPhonen or iPad! Technology huh?

Thanks for your help. I'll come back with the outcome in due course.

I'm noticing a pattern emerging here when trusting buyers are calling Apple service technicians for help regarding this specific new product concern:

Trusting buyer purchases new cycle 2020 iPad Air 4.

Trusting buyer notices immediately upon opening and operating an unusual & unexplainable battery drain while unit is idle.

Trusting buyer calls Apple for help.

Apple service technician informs buyer to purchase a new cord from Apple to backup the unit before help can commence.

Trusting buyer purchases new cord from Apple for backup.

Trusting buyer again calls Apple service technician.

Apple service technician instructs buyer to perform factory reset using newly purchased cord from Apple.

Trusting buyer performs backup as instructed; no change in solving the iPad Air 4's battery drain.

Trusting buyer informs Apple service technician of the non-change.

Apple service technician informs now-skeptical buyer that all looks normal on their end, and goodbye.

Please note: Apple does not meet the specific call-to-action on behalf of the trusting buyer, nor do they fix the original source of the problem, namely the suspected (and in many cases confirmed over the phone with Apple) defective battery drain; Apple does, however, successful convince the trusting buyer that they need to spend an additional $19 on a cord before they will try to fix an issue that never should have occurred in the first place. In effect Apple generates additional revenue from the trusting buyer by preying on their desperation to remedy a seemingly defective situation out-of-the-box.

This, dear readers, reads like a scam.

Thanks for that information. I wonder if I might have jumped the gun with my complaint as I found the transfer of info to my new iPad Air (14.3) was not complete...lots of books and emails did not automatically download. Now they are. The last time I charged to 100% 0n Tuesday 29 at 1.54 Australian Central daylight savings time, it was all downloaded. In short, it is now 9 am on 31st Dec here and the iPad has lost only 5%.

However, I looked at it several hours ago and it was 96% and apart from looking at battery usage since Tuesday, it has dropped 2% this morning. No activity by apps.

I'll come back when I've spent some time using the thing...HOWEVER, I've got it open beside me ATM and it seems to be dropping 1% every few minutes just being on!!!
