updating to ipados14.1

I was wondering if anybody else is encountering this problem:

I have an iPad Pro model MLMP2LL/A which I bought in 2017. I have tried since the beginning of October to update to iPadOS 14 with no luck. The update seems to download OK, But when settings shows that it is preparing the installation after a while I get a message that it failed. I am connected to power and my Wi-Fi is on OK. This has happened many times. I have turned the iPad Off then back on, I have rebooted my router, etc.

Then when I try to connect my iPad Pro to my MacBook Air and update that way, and update that way, the MacBook cannot recognize my iPad. I have tried both USB ports on my MacBook, and two different USB cables with no luck. I have tried both USB ports on my MacBook, and two different USB cables with no luck. So that’s no help either.

I would appreciate any suggestions!

Try these, especially “Remove and download the update again”.

If these fail, you likely have a hardware issue and should visit an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center for assistance.

Hi! Thank you for your reply. I Purchased my MacBook Air 13″ in 2017, serial # C02TWGHPJ1WK, OS is Catalina 10.15.7, under Hardware all it says about USB is: USB 3.0 BUS, BRCM20702 HUB, Bluetooth USB host controller??? But I am pretty sure that I have just the regular USB and not the USB C As I just looked it up and it looks different from what I have.

And as I could not see the iPad pro in the Finder I opened the window for the MacBook Air, and I was able to see my iPad Pro under Locations On the left side of the window, but only intermittently as I explained earlier.

It does not make sense to me that I can’t connect my iPad Pro to my MacBook Air effectively with a USB cable, but I can connect it to my crappy little PC laptop with no problem. I only use this because my tax preparers software only runs on a PC.

I have to use iTunes on the PC laptop to see my iPad Pro, but I can see everything on it with no problem from there, while on my MacBook Air which is a much better device I cannot see the iPad Pro except it’s icon it intermittently and no info at all!

Unfortunately I can’t update Windows on the PC because there isn’t enough space on it. And I have tried to download a new version of iTunes to it unsuccessfully. So I am unable to update my iPad Pro to 14.1 using the PC because it tells me that 13.7 is the current update for my iPad Pro! It’s all very frustrating. If you have any more advice I would sure appreciate it

OK, now I got new information but I have not tried it yet:

Supposedly doing a SMC reset with the MacBook Air might help the connection problem? I don’t really understand that

Another suggestion is:

“ if you just kill usbd (Force quit) in Activity Monitor, you'll see that the iPhone stops disconnecting and keeps charging/tethering until the next time you plug and unplug your iPhone to the USB port again. “ Again I don’t really understand this too well. I assume this would be done on the MacBook Air and it would do something to the way the USB is functioning?

Yet another suggestion is that the problem is the power supply; if my iPad Pro is connected with a USB cable to my MacBook Air somehow there is a problem getting enough power to connect properly even though the MacBook is plugged in to power???

Thanks! I have done that but will keep trying. I’m sure you realize it’s almost impossible to visit an Apple store or to get service at a service center these days.

another interesting thing just happened. Although I seem to be unable to connect my iPad Pro to my MacBook Air I am able to connect it to my old HP laptop, and I can see it in the iTunes app there, unfortunately the iTunes app is outdated, And it Keeps telling me that 13 .7 Is the current iOS for my iPad!
