I'm trying to use an exterior microphone on my iPhone SE. I have an appropriate cable/connector. When using either the native "camera" app or MOTIV Video, the relevant monitor shows the phone is receiving an audio signal, but the movie taken using either program is silent. What am I doing wrong? How do I get the audio from an external mic to record using the "camera" app or MOTIV Video?

Check this for help, If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working - Apple Support You need to make sure that you have provided access to the Mic for whatever apps you are using in Settings>Privacy.
Try recording without the external microphone to start with and see what happens. It could be something about the connection to the mic, given how it is connected.
Thanks, Chris. Both apps have permission to access a microphone. I cannot tell from the description in the iPhone privacy page whether that permission extends only to the in-phone mic or to exterior mics, too. It is odd that I am having this problem, because I have used this exterior mic successfully in the distant past. Unfortunately I do not remember the settings I used then. As I said originally when I posted this question, the programs acknowledge they are receiving an audio signal; but sound does not play when I play the video during which it was recorded. Very strange...
Thanks again, Chris. I did try that. It worked; I got video files with audio using the in-phone mic.
Then I would check with the microphone manufacturer's support regarding using that external mic and see what they say. Good luck.
