how to get boot camp on external hard drive

I own a 2017 MacBook Pro, recently with online classes I need to download Solidworks onto my computer. The only problem is I don't have enough storage space left. So I bought and external hard drive in the hopes of downloading Boot Camp to it so I can run programs. I try and use other resources online to help me with this problem but every one seems to not work with my laptop, or the program isn't compatible. Can anyone help me out on how to properly do it without screwing everything up?
