Apple TV, what 4-digit password?

I have an older model AppleTV (at least 5-6 years old) and recently lost the remote. I have the AppleTV remote app on my phone and am trying to use it to control the AppleTV, but the phone is asking me to enter a 4-digit password (that I have long forgotten) to connect to the AppleTV.

It is not asking for an AirPlay passcode -- it is asking for an AppleTV password. How can I get to the settings on the AppleTV to change the password when I cannot control the TV without the remote?

Apple TV asks for Apple ID password, enter it.
An authentication code will be sent to your iPhone or iPad or Mac.
Apple TV asks for the Apple ID password again, enter it followed by the authentication code. For example if your Apple ID password is XYZ123 and the authentication code is 4567 enter XYZ1234567
Do this quickly or it will time out!

but my apple ID password is not a 4-digit number. I tried entering all the 4-digit numbers I thought it could be, but none worked and AppleTV locked me out for too many attempts.
