Apple TV passcode issue

Hi, I lost my Apple TV remote ages ago for my second gen Apple TV. I was happily using the Remote app on my phone but since updating to 15.01, that Remote app no longer works. Instead, the phone says the remote has been transferred to the Control Centre. Trying the control centre remote, it recognises my Apple Tvs but does not work automatically. It instead asks me to input a passcode into my Apple TV to be able to use my phone as the remote. That does not appear to be possible without having an external remote.


I really don't want to have to buy another remote if I can help it, for the principle as much as anything. Can anyone advise whether there are any workarounds?
