When creating a new folder (using control+shift+N) or using the "New Folder" command, the new folder defaults to the bottom of the screen, and is opened in the main directory. As a result, I then have to drag the new folder to the correct location. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do to open a new folder without having the do the drag/drop action to move the new folder where I want it?

Nevermind. I answered my own question. It's because I'm in Column View.
You have to create the new folder in the location where you want it.
I missed something you said in your original post. The new folder command is "command shift N", not "control shift N".

I highlighted the folder where I wanted it (in the below example, I highlighted/clicked on Sub Directory B), then used the new folder command, and the system dropped the new folder back at the main directory, or in this example 2. New folder. It didn't create the new folder as a sub folder under 1.2. Sub directory B

In the Finder, you must double-click the parent folder (your Main Directory name) to open it before you create a new folder within it. You can then create peer folders (e.g. A B and C), then double-click folder B to open it, and then create a new folder in it.
Sorry - control shift is a Windows thing. Old habit. Yes, am using Command+Shift+N

Hmmm. Why don't i have to double-click??? I just select a folder, press "command shift N", then I get a new folder inside the selected folder.
How do I create a sub-directory?
