Programming or writing code on ipad pro

Hi, next semester i´m studying in Parsons design and technology, this career needs me to have a device in which I can learn to program or write codes.

I wanted to buy an ipad pro, but I don´t know if this ipad will allow me to write code easily, given that this would be my first time doing so.

What do you recommend? Should I stick to the laptop I already have or switch to the ipad, which i think would allow me to design all sorts of things, write down my notes and also program (this is the thing I am not certain about)

thank you

Stick with a laptop. An iPad can only use apps which you get from Apple's store. You have no idea what you might want or need to install from other places to do what is required by your school or your professional needs. Plus you will probably often want to use multiple apps at once, which is much easier on a full computer.

What does the school’s own IT department recommend? Almost every school will have minimum specs for their programs and the software they require you to use.

If you got a Mac instead of an iPad you will have access to all of the open source compilers and tools that run in Linux. Opens up much more possibilities to learn programming, like Python or PERL, as well as combining blocks of different languages (e.g. math functions coded in C++ or FORTRAN, using Python for graphical output and interface).

nataliacortina; You say you want to learn programming and write code on the iPad. There is an app that I’ve been using for 8 years on my different iPads that allows me to write code. The language it uses is Lua which is similar to C or C++ but not as extensive. It’s an easy language to learn, but the app doesn’t teach you to code. It assumes you know programming or you’ll learn to code from somewhere else. The app is Codea and I think has a price of $14.99 US. You can look at it in the App Store and if you use the app, there is a Codea forum with many users that will answer your questions and help with coding problems. As I’ve said, I’ve used it for 8 years and there are still things that I haven’t tried with the code. I have 40+ years of programming experience and find using the app to be fun and allows me to do just about anything on the iPad. If you have any questions, you can ask them here or on the Codea forum. I’ll see them either place.

PS. I have no financial interest in Codea other than having fun using it. Over the past 8 years, I haven’t had any complaints with the app. I do find bugs every now and then which the authors usually fix in an update.

I couldn’t edit my above response, but if you want to see more info on Codea, try Codea.io . At the top of the page is Codea Talk which takes you to the forum. Or Reference, which takes you to the Codea Reference manual that gives you a list of the Codea programming commands. You can look thru the commands to get an idea of its power.
