removing icons from desktop without deleting the app

I have slack on my dock and a slack icon on my desktop. Having both is annoying and I prefer to use the dock to open apps. When I move the slack icon from my desktop to the trash and then try to open slack using the icon on the dock, I get an error saying something like, "You cannot open this application because it is in the trash."

I wish you could just right click (or two finger click) icons on your desktop and select "remove shortcut" or "delete shortcut".

Please advise

You dragged the Slack app to the Trash. Don't do that. If you don't want the app icon on the Desktop, put it somewhere else. Drag it to Applications or anywhere else (subject to certain limitations) that makes organizational sense to you.

Dragging the app to Applications will require Admin credentials. That's normal.

It might be simpler to remember icons in the Dock are not the app.
