Catalina & Toshiba external Hard Drive corruption

Help. I'm going on 80 and am a healer not tech person. My Toshiba external hard drive has all of iPhoto, iTunes, Healing folders, all pics for my healing shop, etc. basically, my life on it. I thought I was backing up to another hard drive but find out they are alias's and not recent either. Anyway, I've had Catalina for awhile, so not sure that's the problem. Suddenly, after a long time the partitions show up on my desktop. But, cannot really access them. The little round colorful spinner just keeps spinning. I bought another Toshiba external hard drive but do not know what to do next. I cannot lose the years of info on this corrupt drive. Is there a way to save everything?
