Apple volume turned down when using headphones

For some reason, Apple have decided to let my phone analyse how I’m using headphones when listening to music, and then unexpectedly turning down the volume without even asking me. I can turn up the volume again, but this is extremely annoying.

I find this a problem because:-

this was not mentioned in the notes of what the update would include;

I listen to very varied music, so it can go from very loud to very quiet, so this makes the quiet bits too quiet to hear;

notifications come up every time it does this, with a sound that also interrupts the music;

if I am in a loud environment, the music is turned down too low to hear properly;

there does not seem to be any way of stopping this that I have found.

Does anyone know a way of stopping this. It is exceptionally annoying, and I have had to start reusing an old iPhone just to play my music through my headphones. This will not be updated as I know that this would happen again.

Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Reduce Loud Sounds

Is it marked Allow? If it is mark Don't Allow

Then go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > Turn off Reduce Loud Sounds if turned on

> Guess you couldn't be bothered to read past the first post to see Apple released iOS 14.4, which addresses this?

Except 14.4 does not address this issue. The issue is that Apple assumes that all people use a specific kind of headphone, so the volume set in the device would be an indication of the volume that a customer hears. But that's nonsense: I'm using a regular audio cable both in my car and when listening to music with the iPhone via a speaker at home. The volume that I actually hear depends only what I set up on those devices and has (almost) nothing to do with what the iPhone things (except the volume drops significantly when Apple messes with its own volume).

Due to this wrong assumption, "Due to regulations and safety standards, headphone notifications can't be turned off in certain countries or regions" still applies. But the regulation doesn't say what Apple does: It only says that the volume must be limited to 85 dB. Apple could simply be honest and say the truth: The iPhone has no idea what volume I am exposed to.

Here's the text of that regulation: https://ec.europa.eu/health/scientific_committees/opinions_layman/en/hearing-loss-personal-music-player-mp3/l-3/3-hearing-protection-limits.htm

Even when connecting to the speaker via Bluetooth, that setting that they have apparently introduced in 14.4 does not exist. When I tap the (i), there simply is no device type. And I am using iOS 14.4. But this is probably one of the region where that applies.

i have this issue too, really annoying and distracting when doing anything.

headphones, well i have very good moulded in ear jobs so i only need a low volume. and i rarely use headphones

but i mainly use BT to stream to my car or a BT speaker, so high phone volume and low speaker volume.

raised this with apple today and sent screen shots to the person on the phone as the web chat people tried but just couldn't get it. they did tell me that the BT sees everything as headphones regardless of what it is.

the person on the phone was amazed and understood this feature is dangerous.

i explained i was trying everything from on here to stop it, but today i was working on some electrical wiring. had the tunes on as i was working. now the electrics were off, i knew they were off as i double and triple checked it, but when the music to me stopped i freaked out a little. juggling screwdriver, light fitting and screws. thankfully i wasn't up a ladder or even driving my car. but this is a **** of a dangerous "feature" by all means have a warning that flashed up on screen for 30 secs and goes away, but DO NOT lower my volume!!

before anyone says anything yes, i have sent the feedback form, yes i raised it with apple support, and tweeted to @tim cook as well. now i'm waiting to here back from apple support to see what happens next and i've advised that if they search here and even google it they will find multiple entries about this worldwide problem that they need to be fixing asap!!

just had a lovely conversation with apple technical support after doing the web chat last well.

i have now got my issue logged and engineering is aware of it. however as we both agreed i'm only one small voice.

i did point out this has been picked up here and across multiple apple forums/ blogs and there is even a bit in national UK press about it. telegraph paper i think. no subscription so can't read it all.

i also pointed out it is dangerous and reputationally damaging to apple, but again i'm only one small voice.

can everyone please fill out the feed back form and web chat, raise to technical as the more of us feeding back the more likely something will be done about it. the more voices reporting it the higher up the ladder it goes to get fixed.

all ready doing that Piki88, thank you for the advice, it is appreciated. but i get about an hour then volume halved again.

health app was deleted but i still have health in the phone regardless.

the more people to complain about it and use the feed back form, twitter. (@tim_cook and @AppleSupport) and any other form of communication, the more likely they are to do something about it.

working in a big corporate industry, the more people to shout/ moan/ complaint about it, the more likely it will be flagged to higher management and something gets done about it. least thats been my experience.

Lol! Lot of apple fanboys here it seems. In my opinion, apple is all about making money these days. My phones WiFi keeps dropping. A MacBook Pro I recently bought will shut down even at 10 percent battery life/ my old air used to do much better.

Value for money has gone south and now they are trying to police me. Not buying a policing apple, not buying a speed restricted Volvo; period.

Anyways, have upgraded to 14.4 and changed the Bluetooth device identification to speaker; let’s see how that works.

I had the same problem when listening while on my motorcycle. I wear ear plugs to prevent the wind noise and have my Sena set turned up loud. How apple can presume to know what is best for us on all product lines is crazy. They are causing more danger to me on my motorcycle than not having this Nanny feature.

apple support told me I can’t downgrade and that I should’ve seen the update notes. They never disclose anything properly before basically forcing updates
