Apple volume turned down when using headphones

For some reason, Apple have decided to let my phone analyse how I’m using headphones when listening to music, and then unexpectedly turning down the volume without even asking me. I can turn up the volume again, but this is extremely annoying.

I find this a problem because:-

this was not mentioned in the notes of what the update would include;

I listen to very varied music, so it can go from very loud to very quiet, so this makes the quiet bits too quiet to hear;

notifications come up every time it does this, with a sound that also interrupts the music;

if I am in a loud environment, the music is turned down too low to hear properly;

there does not seem to be any way of stopping this that I have found.

Does anyone know a way of stopping this. It is exceptionally annoying, and I have had to start reusing an old iPhone just to play my music through my headphones. This will not be updated as I know that this would happen again.

Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Reduce Loud Sounds

Is it marked Allow? If it is mark Don't Allow

Then go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > Turn off Reduce Loud Sounds if turned on

Possibly they will again, but I have had Samsung devices since the Galaxy S. They went through a stage (S2 onwards) of lowering overall volume in the EU but after a few years they dropped it and went back to normal. It was easy to root the devices to hack the volume but there's no need to do that with the current ones.

As I stated, you can use a USB C DAC with the Samsungs to greatly increase the volume but you can't do that on the iphone because Apple still use their proprietary out of date connector.

Seems okay now, however my Bluetooth connection keeps dropping in my car, this is dangerous when I’m driving. Contacted apple and on my second iPhone 12 now, no difference still disconnects for no reason (my old iPhone XS MAX still has no issues, and has never had issues connecting to my car this iPhone has the latest 14.4 update too) worse iPhone ever the 12, and it also same with WiFi, I tried turning off and resetting connectivity (5G to Auto & back to 4G) no difference. Terrible, will move away from apple as their lack of support is no good either.

Thank you all for your input. It had not updated to 14.4, which is odd as I have auto updates enabled. However, the reason for that may be connected to something DAZHOOD pointed out, which is that my Iphone 12 pro is also having difficulty getting and staying connected to bluetooth and the web- keep having to turn wifi off in order to use cellular data to listen to podcasts etc, as it remains more reliable than wifi. Back soon with update on the volume drop issue, however bottom line for me is that when I spend $1,000 on Apples latest and greatest I expect these kinds of bugs to be dealt with before it hits the market. Not all bugs, but to have no ability to control the volume or to remain connected to wifi and bluetooth...not cool.

I posted on here and my own post thread last Saturday, I decided to call Apple yet again as having WiFi Bluetooth and 3, 4 and 5G issues with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, I explained my problems and they offered another new iPhone 12 Pro Max, I have had 2 of these phones over a month which I have updated to 14.4, erased, reset connectivity etc and setup and uploaded all my 3rd party apps from scratch, and still not finished that yet and still issues with my second iPhone! So I am sending my present phone back and got myself a shiny new iPhone 11 and guess what, no issues with connectivity in my car and WiFi at home, found the car’s Bluetooth no problems! When I sorted this out with apple over the telephone I can honestly say the didn’t even ask me anything to counter what i discussed with them and offered no action whatsoever on how to resolve the technical issues with the phones I had. To me they just want your money, very disappointed in apple, I hope they read this!

QuickTimeKirk- in this case it's not the what or why...it's the how. It's a fine offering, but a very clumsy delivery. The delivery makes it feel to consumers like these decisions are being made for them... hence this discussion and the many users having the same issue. I see your 101,873 "points" and infer that you're very adept and up to date with these nuances- most Apple users buy Apple so that they don't have to be. I'm a 45 year old, lifetime Apple devotee- this is the first thread I've ever been involved in, which should speak to my point regarding growing frustration.
