PS4 controller/AirPods Pro Apple TV 4K

I’m wondering if anyone is having this issue with Apple TV 4K. For the PS4 controller, it never connects, even when I turn on the PS button and it starts flashing. I have to pair it every single time I want to use it with the TV. And with the AirPods Pro, I have to go to settings each and every time to connect them to the Apple TV, even though they’re paired already.

I think maybe the iOS 14 and TVOS 14 is the issue? I have noticed that ever since they came out with automatic pairing of AirPods with whatever device you’re using is 50/50. Sometimes my AirPods won’t connect to my phone at all and I have to go through settings just connect them. And most of the time I have to go through settings on Apple TV to connect them as they VERY RARELY connect on their own.

And mind you, my iPad and iPhone screens are off and I’m not using them at the moment, so there should be no reason why my AirPods won’t connect when I put them in when Apple TV is on. It’s frustrating to have to exit Netflix or Apple TV app or whatever else I’m using, go to settings, go to remotes and devices, scroll down to my AirPods and connect them 80% of the time.

I never really liked the automatic connecting based on what device you’re using because I’ll be using my phone and AirPods using the Roku app then my wife will turn on my iPad and my AirPods will connect to the iPad and I lose all audio with what I’m watching. It’s truly frustrating and I wish you could turn this feature off. If you can then I haven’t been able to find it.

Can someone help me out here. Anyone else having these issues?

Hi there DyreLogan,

Thanks for posting! Being able to use accessories with your Apple TV is definitely important. If we understand correctly, your AirPods and PS4 controller don't seem to be automatically connecting with your Apple TV. Is that correct?

To verify, this is happening when your AirPods or PS4 controller are not in use with any other devices, right?

Since this seems to be happening with multiple Bluetooth devices and sounds like it's intermittent, it might be a good start to check for possible interference: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

Let us know if this helps.

Take care.

Yes it seems to be intermittent. I think maybe a software update will fix the problem. It connects sometimes but most of the time it doesn’t. Same with the PS4 controller. Except with the controller I always have to forget device and connect it again to the Apple TV every time I use it.

I’m guessing the software that just came out with iOS 14 is not universal? Meaning that if I have Apple TV on then my AirPods won’t connect automatically, regardless if I have my phone and iPad turned off and not in use? I was hoping that Apple would fix this issue, seeing as they introduced this automatic connecting feature in iOS 14. I’m guessing tvOS doesn’t have such a feature?

Hi DyreLogan,

We appreciate the reply. Regarding automatic switching between devices, you are correct that it is not a function of tVOS. This link has some more information about how you can Switch AirPods automatically between iPhone and other devices.

"Switch AirPods back to your iPhone

If your AirPods automatically switch from your iPhone to another device but you want them to stay connected to your iPhone, tap  (in the “Moved to” notice at the top of the iPhone screen).

To turn off automatic switching, go to Settings  > Bluetooth, tap  next to the name of your AirPods, tap Connect to This iPhone, then tap When Last Connected to This iPhone.

Note: Automatic switching works on supported models of AirPods and Beats products and requires iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS Big Sur, or later."

Regarding using this feature with tvOS, you can always send your suggestion directly to Apple here: Product Feedback

We hope this is helpful. Have a good one!
