Clips Not Showing Up During Import?

I am running Final Cut Pro X version 10.4.3 on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I have been filming with cameras and uploading the footage from those cameras into FCP to make and edit videos, and it has worked for years. But just last week, the cameras didn't show any clips when I tried to import. And if I opened the camera's hard drive on the desktop, all that was there was a file called AVCHD, and it was an archive of multiple Quicktime movies, and those movies were the clips I filmed. I tried using the same camera to connect to different computers and they all worked the way that the one computer in question always used to work; FCP recognized the individual videos, and looking at the hard drive on the desktop showed the individual clips as well. Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Try trashing the preferences as detailed below but note that when FCP X opens it will be in its default (as new) state with no projects loaded.

You will have to navigate to any project you need.

If  FCP X starts behaving unexpectedly in any way for no apparent reason, the problem could be caused by corrupt preference files.

The cure for this is to delete the preferences.

Hold down the  Cmd and Option keys as you launch  FCP X and a window will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences.

Click “Delete Preferences” and  FCP X will open in the default (as-new) mode with no projects etc. on the interface.

You will have to navigate to any project you were working on and reopen it.  Your project libraries by default are stored in your Movies folder unless you have specified somewhere different.

Deleting preferences is completely safe and because of its simplicity it should be the first thing you do when troubleshooting.

Here’s a little trick. Hold Opt-Cmd as the application launches. When the dialog asking if you want to trash preferences appears, release the Command key but keep holding Option. Click trash and continue holding Option. The What’s New screen appears, keep holding Option and click Continue. A screen will then appear asking for you to select a library to open. You can let go of Option and Locate your library on your hard drive.
