Does the iphone 12 scratch easily?

i have my iphone 12 here with me still in the box, i’m scared to open it as a quick google search has resulted in many people saying their iphone 12’s have scratched really easily. As i’ve payed £799 i don’t want to scratch it, any answers?

Your prerogative, of course.

But be aware that the Samsung forums are full of customers complaining how easily their screens scratch, and Samsungs come with a screen protector preinstalled from the factory.

Corning, and the industry as a whole, worked together to move to a glass that is somewhat easier to scratch but is much more shatter-resistant.

You can add a screen protector to protect against scratches; there’s nothing you can apply to a screen to meaningfully protect it from shattering.

As usual a lot of people have said their screens are showing scratches. I have had my iPhone 12 pro max Spence release day with no screen protector (the cheap ones I ordered did not arrive until yesterday). No scratches or nicks or anything. Same thing with my moms. So unless I’m super lucky (and always have been. Never had an iPhone screen scratch) I don’t know if it’s universally easy to scratch. Will the screen scratch? Of course it can and if you’re not careful it likely will. But a cheap $5.99 6 pack of SuperShieldz or any other cheap screen protector (glass or the thin sheets) will help eliminate the worry

Did it crack or scratch? Two different things.

This article is older but still applies; in short modern phone screens are somewhat easier to scratch than old ones because they are a bit softer and thus less likely to shatter if dropped.

Yep. Had the phone 1 day, already has a scratch right in the center of the screen. If Apple were a decent company, they would offer a free screen replacement for the 12’s. For the amount of money these things cost, they should withstand normal use without damage. I haven’t even had a chance to put the protector on yet, but in all honesty, you shouldn’t have to even do that if it were a decent product.

No, actually, I'd tell you all cars rust to some degree, it's expected.

Nevertheless, if your phone scratched it was because you chose not to apply a screen protector and performed some operation that scratched it that involved abrading the screen with something harder than 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (the hardness of the iPhone front glass); there's no other way it can occur.

Note the most common mineral in sand, which is the most likely source of a hard material in your pocket or unknowingly on your finger, is quarts, Mohs 7.

Again, why?

Because glass can be scratch-resistant and brittle or more scratch prone and less brittle.

You can apply a $30 screen protector to prevent scratches; you can't do anything other than use a case to prevent the screen from shattering if dropped, and most prefer to spend $30 on a protector than pay hundreds of dollars to replace a shattered screen.
