iPhone 12 is so slow

Thank you! Turning off the “private network” for my wifi access helped.

Oddly, coincidentally(?), my 5G performance, which also recently took a dramatic performance dive, improved after I turned off the “private address” setting next to my wifi network name.

I don't see why 5G performance would be affected by a wifi setting, but I'm happy my iPhone internet access has stopped sucking for both wifi and 5G.

I just resolved this problem with Apple Support. My iPhone 12 Pro Max was doing very poorly on speed test, (29 download). I did a network reset and speed immediately got back up to 500!

So, the solution is: (on your phone)

Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings>(enter your phone password)> Reset Network Settings.

Same problem as everybody else on this topic. Brand new iPhone 12 pro max with wifi that is basically useless for any serious wifi downloads. Have been a loyal Apple follower/purchaser since I learned my computer skills on the Mac IIci.  This iPhone basically dies after 30min trying download a 1GB file at home. Have done some of the resetting recommendations on this thread with no improvement. Tried this same phone on my employers network and was able to download this same 1GB file in 5min!  Being on the COX cable service I then decided to replace my 5yr old home AIrPort wifi  system with their combination Router/Modem. After the replacement and no required modifications I was able to download and install a 2GB game in 1min45sec !!  Customers should not have to be a wi-fi technician to make current Apple products work - Apple needs to better test their products before release. 

Could my 5yr old AirportExtreme( 6th generation) be part of the problem - possibly. It still would not explain why I was able to complete large operating system update downloads on all my Apple products.  Maybe in today WIFI standards the time required to complete these updates was considered too slow, BUT IT STILL WORKED.  But again, only my new 2020 iPhones basically froze trying to download 1gb+ files through my 5yr old AirportExtreme( 6th generation). I believe there are some Apple compatibility and software issues. But my problem is solved with a new combination modem/router. Thanks for everybody’s comments

Turn off the VPN option by going to setings

Then you should see the first screen witht he Airplane mode and 5 other options

The very last one of that group should ve the Blue VPN box. Click that and another window will open.

Click on the button to the right Make sure it says not connected. See photo provided.

Apple support checked hardware and said it was good. They suggested an icloud backup and factory reset. I did that and screen still locks up. Seems like it did help with speeds for whatever reason. But since the reset the screen has locked up 5 times. Usually happens in safari and on home screens.

I have been playing with this issue and discovered that my iPhone 12 was connecting to my slower wifi 2g instead of the 5g wifi connection. I made the iPhone forget the 2g network and connect only to the 5g and the problem is fixed.

Mine was recently taking forever to contact and load sites on wifi and cellular. Finally discovered a Verizon Digital Secure VPN active that I wasn’t even aware of. Turned that off and the issues were immediately fixed.

Open settings, touch WiFi, next to the network you are connected to is a little i with a circle around it. Touch that. Then toggle off the private address function. I agree it’s not a complete fix- but it works. Discovered that because when searching this same problem I got lots of hits for WiFi not working on other phones besides the 12, since iOS 14 comes out. If I discover how to make private address work, I’ll post back.

go to settings > cellular > cellular data options and use anything but 5g auto.

it seems that 5g auto on iphone 12 is just not optimized. try to not use low power mode and switch data mode to 5g on (can’t help with the wifi but with cellular that turns off the data throttling)

run speed tests it if you want but you should see the connection start at really low speeds at first and speed up later if you use 5g auto.

if you still get problems, also try using lte mode which is the exact same as your xs. and that will likely solve connection issues.

remember as well that apple is extremely good at giving patches on stuff like this if it’s software related so just give them time. to iron this out. 5g is still in its early stages so it usually is not faster than regular data in my experience.

Hi All, many phone is now working well. My issue was VPN related. I updated my IP12ProMax from my old phone however when I looked in settings/VPN the toggle switch was switching on and off and was blocking most apps from using WiFi.

To resolve I turned off VPN, then deleted my VPN app and reinstalled it and turned back on VPN everything started working from there on!

My only complaint was that when on WiFi it would be very slow but I read online turn my WiFi assist off in setting and to reset the network and I did and now I do t any more probs phone works great but now my only issue is the voice to text which I use a lot bc I don’t like typing but compared to android it’s not very good it screws up what I say a lot

The phone actually does feel a little faster since I turned off bold text . I was missing my google pixel big time but now I’m really enjoying this iPhone more ! Web pages are loading faster . I’m wondering if certain sites and apps were trying to adjust to the bold text which was slowing it down. I still feel like it could be faster but ... it’s better than it was .
