iPhone 12 is so slow

My new iPhone 12 is slow internally and especially when using the internet, even on WiFi. News feed won't even refresh. I'll try opening something from settings and it's even slow to open things that doesn't require internet. I'm constantly turning it off to see if this will help and it doesn't. I'm having a hard time using the internet even with the best wifi, it's almost dial up speeds to open a webpage. Is phone broken or is this normal? My old iPhone XS Max was 100x faster.

iPhone 12 pro max same issue. Running 14.2.1. So annoying! My daughter’s iPod touch will load quickly, husband’s iPhone 8 loads quickly, other daughter’s iPhone 6s loads quickly, I get network errors and I’m left waiting. I tried disconnecting WiFi and running only cellular, but why???!! BTW my last phone did this same thing, so maybe it’s an issue with my profile backup???

thanks for advice. I just scheduled appointment with Apple tech. My husband is having same issue he said. My last phone worked great. Just this one. And it maybe profile issue as all my Apple settings did not port over with new phone even though I had a more qualified professional back it up and port it for me. I’m not sure. It maybe phone itself.

Open settings, touch WiFi, next to the network you are connected to is a little i with a circle around it. Touch that. Then toggle off the private address function. I agree it’s not a complete fix- but it works. Discovered that because when searching this same problem I got lots of hits for WiFi not working on other phones besides the 12, since iOS 14 comes out. If I discover how to make private address work, I’ll post back.

I’m having the same issue. Brand new iPhone 12 pro is annoyingly sloooow. I’ve had it for 2 weeks but after 2 days, I put it back in the box and fired up my old iPhone X. It sucks because I waited for the 12 and I was so excited. I wonder if it has anything to do w COVID....maybe after everything beings shut down, it was rushed out. It all comes down to the old mighty dollar after all. I’m gonna try it for a day and if it’s not better, I’ll return it 😟

So when you open your WiFi in settings you will see networks or WiFi you are connected to. Next to those networks is that blue circle with the i in it. Click that blue circle. Look down like 4 boxes on that page and you'll see private address with option to turn on or off. Turn it off. It definitely makes phone faster on WiFi.

im still going in to apple care for help. My internal stuff is still even slow and phone almost inoperable on cellular. I think everyone should report this bug so that it's actually fixed.

So I went into an actual apple store and got assistance from apple care. The guy could not find anything wrong with my phone but he did find that when the power saver mode is on, the phone is only able to connect to LTE internet. I have no idea what LTE internet is, he said it’s just older slower internet. It was the first time he saw the 12’s do that so hopefully more people will come forward with this issue and it gets fixed. Gentlemen also had me do a setting reset. Phone works great now and at speeds I would expect a new phone to work at.

go to settings > cellular > cellular data options and use anything but 5g auto.

it seems that 5g auto on iphone 12 is just not optimized. try to not use low power mode and switch data mode to 5g on (can’t help with the wifi but with cellular that turns off the data throttling)

run speed tests it if you want but you should see the connection start at really low speeds at first and speed up later if you use 5g auto.

if you still get problems, also try using lte mode which is the exact same as your xs. and that will likely solve connection issues.

remember as well that apple is extremely good at giving patches on stuff like this if it’s software related so just give them time. to iron this out. 5g is still in its early stages so it usually is not faster than regular data in my experience.

go to wifi settings click your network and make sure low data mode is off if you are getting this on data too go to settings > cellular > cellular data options > 5g on

you can also use lte which is the exact same as your 11 but do not use 5g auto because it purposefully slows your connection until you use it but it’s really slow so you have to wait for it to speed up every time you connect.

Same problem as everybody else on this topic. Brand new iPhone 12 pro max with wifi that is basically useless for any serious wifi downloads. Have been a loyal Apple follower/purchaser since I learned my computer skills on the Mac IIci.  This iPhone basically dies after 30min trying download a 1GB file at home. Have done some of the resetting recommendations on this thread with no improvement. Tried this same phone on my employers network and was able to download this same 1GB file in 5min!  Being on the COX cable service I then decided to replace my 5yr old home AIrPort wifi  system with their combination Router/Modem. After the replacement and no required modifications I was able to download and install a 2GB game in 1min45sec !!  Customers should not have to be a wi-fi technician to make current Apple products work - Apple needs to better test their products before release.

Hi All, many phone is now working well. My issue was VPN related. I updated my IP12ProMax from my old phone however when I looked in settings/VPN the toggle switch was switching on and off and was blocking most apps from using WiFi.

To resolve I turned off VPN, then deleted my VPN app and reinstalled it and turned back on VPN everything started working from there on!

I have bought numerous Apple Products in the last 20 yrs and they all “just work” out of the box. During the past several years I have updated my old and new iPhones, iPads, and iMacs through the various major operating system upgrades iOS 11,12,13,14 & macOS on my AirportExtreme(Tall) with no download issues. However, with the purchase of both iPhone mini and iPhone 12 ProMax they BOTH demonstrated the same wifi very slow download speeds with large files. At least it’s nice to know that COX Cable combination Router/Modem “just works” with NO setting modifications. And again customers should not have to be a wi-fi technician to make new Apple products work on exiting Apple products - Apple needs to better test their products for compatibility issues before release.
