PROBLEM SOLVED! Apple was not able to tell me if it was a hardware or software issue. But since the CPU energy impact was hovering in the 300-400 range, I decided to turn off my various email accounts. Once I realized that it was my Gmail account running through my Apple Email software, I did the following:

  1. Ensure the IMAP is turned on in my web browser version of Gmail.
  2. Checked to make sure all of my email and folders were a match between the web version and my desktop version (via Apple Mail software) of Gmail on my MacBook
  3. Went to Apple Mail, clicked the drop down menu and chose Accounts - I used the minus (-) symbol and deleted the Gmail account from the Apple Mail software.
  4. I then clicked the + symbol and chose Google for the mail option and followed the steps to set up my Gmail again through the Apple Mail software.
  5. While I had to wait for all of the mail to download again, it kept everything in tact, including my inbox, archived folders, etc.

Everything is now working again at regular speeds and CPU power usage. And no more hot MacBook or spinning fan! Good luck if you need to do this.
