some urls, like news with graphics, run poorly in Safari

Some URL's, like news channels run poorly in Safari. No improvement w/ the latest 14.0.

I did look around in finder and discarded a suspicious program.

If a website is using an excessive amount of memory, those symptoms may be an indication.

It's very easy to determine if your Mac's performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac will benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't. It's that simple.

Examine Activity Monitor both before and after loading those so-called "news" sites. Keep the Activity Monitor window open, then close each Safari window or tab and observe the results.

In the meantime I suggest using Safari Reader: Hide ads when reading articles in Safari on Mac. It's not perfect but it will hide all those resource-demanding ads, trackers, obnoxious graphics, etc. It may interest you to know Reader is the default mode on iOS.

Once again Apple is ahead of the curve. Nobody wants their Macs to be weighed down with obnoxious advertisements and invasive cross-site tracking. Nobody other than advertisers anyway. Apple's sole motivation is that you enjoy your Apple devices and derive the greatest economic life from them.

I'm no expert, but probably you should reference Safari as having a problem, not the OS.

In my case, older Airbook, I got some relief by cleaning out some extraneous apps I had and not running multiple windows when on FoxNews or other skittish sites. Fortunately in my case there are other sites of this genre that have way less going on.

So-called "news" sites are often completely choked by interest-based targeted advertisements. They typically occupy 95% or more of the total bandwidth delivered to your Mac, rendering any content you may be interested in reading nearly inaccessible and useless.

You can try ad-blocking software, but none are completely effective or free of unintended effects, and I don't have anything in particular to recommend.

Yes exactly. Thanks.

And thanks to J.Gault for reminding me about the Activity Monitor. I used to have it on all the time on previous Macs. this laptop is an Airbook from 2013(mid) and has been so good (at least as I use it) that its only in the last year or so that I've noticed these probs. So when I go on a site like FoxNews the little meter just goes way into the red with usage.

While I can't do too much about this Airbook, When I get the next one, it's an argument for more ram ... possibly. On the other hand maybe sites like Foxnews will streamline themselves a bit.

Further info.... since first writing this continues though less if I remove all safeties like cross site tracking and cookie blocking. Also I moved up to Safari 14.0. Today I was puzzling about this slow down on the Fox main Page as well as others, when the computer suddenly closed out the screen and kicked me out to the home Safari screen, which on my comp. is blank. There was a message about memory being all used up. So I rebooted and everything is working....My question is : Can I go in and look at memory configuration and adjust anything?? I did go in and cleared website data, around a 1000 items, which I do occasionally. Couldn't see any difference from that.

Thanks in advance.

I've noticed some sites are just bad and filled with stuff running in background like ads and tracking. Scrolling on these sites is also really laggy and choppy. It is interesting that I have noticed Safari getting faster in some ways and other ways once pages are loaded is actually worse in performance. Pretty much depends on what the web site does to make sure its site works well with Safari. Some sites only really focus on Chromium browsers because Chrome makes up so much of market share.

Don't hold your breath. I know of no website on Earth that has not grown more demanding.

You can start with a perfectly capable new Mac, change absolutely nothing about it, and several short years later it is certain to become unusable due to the imposition of ever-increasing demands on fixed resources.

Specifying well-configured hardware to begin with is cheaper over time, especially so with Macs that cannot be upgraded after they're built.
