My iPhone 12 keeps asking for email password

I recently got an iPhone 12 and set up my hotmail account on the phone through the mail app. In the last few days, it has started asking me to re-enter the password every few hours-now up to 6-8 times a day. I've tried deleting and re-installing the account, but to no effect. I've also installed the Outlook app, and it does not seem to have this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this? It's becoming a real nuisance

I found a temporary workaround for Hotmail (Outlook.com) issues to keep receiving push emails without retyping the PW over and over again: setup Hotmail as imap account, this seems (till now) not affected. Hopefully Apple resolves this annoying problem in the next update!

Receive:

imap server: imap-mail.outlook.com

use SSL: on

Authentication: password

port: 993

Send:

smtp-mail.outlook.com

use SSL: on

authentication: password

port: 587

I have the exact same issue as the OP, and I concur this has nothing to do with the Hotmail server, rather than an iOS glitch/issue that needs to be resolved ASAP.

Just like the OP, I too have the outlook (Hotmail) app downloaded and it never requires me to re-enter the password each day as the Apple Mail does to all my Hotmail accounts. Screenshot attached for reference.

I had the same symptoms when the outlook site was totally down for an hour (approximately a month ago). So that tells me that iOS mail gives the account password error as a generic thing when it doesn’t get a response from the outlook site.

Outlook is not down right now, but maybe it’s a bit slow and iOS mail thinks it’s not available. Just supposing... Maybe all iOS mail needs is just a bump in the time it allows for a response from the outlook site.

Servers are okay on hotmail setting on iPhone are correct WiFi on and off WiFi tested email account settings from site and imap and settings on iPhone for Hotmail checked dfu mode and recovery mode check and tried on new phone so as far as I can say it’s an iOS issue only issue is with Hotmail accounts if your having that issue unfortunately and Apple knows it’s an issue and are going to fix that with an update unless you find a worm around also taking off the email and adding it back as what it’s always been a Microsoft Exchange account is only a temporary fix not permanent so regardless it’s still there issue and if someone says otherwise we’ll there’s a need for proof that it’s not that

Hi. I’ve followed your advice on my iPad and iPhone, and 6 hours in it’s ok. I had deleted and reinstalled, and changed all the passwords earlier, but it didn’t seem to help. Each time I’ve been asked to put the password in again, I’ve used keychain, so it sounds like a good idea to manually enter it after reinstalling. I’ll keep you posted if it does the trick (or doesn’t). My daughter says she has never had this problem - then told me she only uses the msn app! Maybe this is the answer we’re looking for!

I did that and in fact tried most of the suggestions in this discussion, none of them worked, the last time I had the problem I just ignored it and used outlook app, a few days later I noticed notifications in mail app that I had mail, I checked the settings where you re-enter password and it was no longer asking for it. I am guessing it has been sorted.

Ive always thought it was because there’s an app somewhere on my phone that was downloaded through another Apple ID. I figured the reason it happens after backups and updates are installed is because it triggers this process of adding passwords back in. Mine asked for my brothers email (we used to switch back and forth for free games) which led me to this conclusion. I don’t think I’m going through all 400 apps to find the one, but maybe this helps someone.

I have just resorted to click on the message and it goes away. I still receive my hotmail and outlook mail. I read that the next update should fix it but am so irritated that Apple cannot communicate to its users. I can only suggest the cancel-sometimes you need to cancel twice. Occasionally you will be “forced” to change it. Bottom line is APPLE NEEDS TO FIX THEIR CODE ASAP.
