Move timeMachine Backups to another location

Before I purchase a bigger harddisk for my backups I would like to know if it is possible to copy the Backups.backupdb folder (and everthing within it) to the bigger disk and let timemachine use that folder further on.

If the answer is "NO" than what can I do?
