Disc stuck inside Apple external Superdrive DVD player.

My Mac ProBook (2015) doesn't recognize the DVD unit in the Finder sidebar although it seems to in the Finder pull down menu (asks if I want to burn desktop), and in the across the top menu eject button (but drive name grayed out). I have tried the support site's suggestions to restart my computer holding down the trackpad button or option key but do not get the supposed eject option result promised. I am ready to just open the unit but I think that will take a hammer. The DVD Player model # is A1379.
