Downloaded 12.18 GB in an hour and it got stuck for next half an hour and gave me error "an error occurred while installing this update". Restarted the upgrade again, got stuck at 2.44 GB for 15 minutes. Rebooted my mac and started the upgrade again and got stuck again at 2.44 GB (attaching the screenshot).

So, I'm finally running Big Sur. took a long time not because my 1Gbps to the internet was slow, but because of the download errors I'm guessing from overwhelmed servers. load seemed to ease by 8PM ET and the download started again at a someone reasonable pace. Errors all afternoon since 1pm ET and constant errors but it seems the load was just too great for their CDN to handle.
