Based on what I have seen in Console.app, The install error is due to the InstallerAssistant.pkg file not being available on the servers. Here is the exact error that I have:

PrefPane: installDidFinishWithError - 001-79699: Error Domain=SUOSUErrorDomain Code=200 "Installation failed" UserInfo={NSLocalizedRecoverySuggestion=An error occurred while installing the selected updates., NSLocalizedDescription=Installation failed, NSUnderlyingError=0x60000103af10 {Error Domain=PKDownloadError Code=8 "(null)" UserInfo={NSUnderlyingError=0x60000103bc30 {Error Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1102 "(null)" UserInfo={NSErrorFailingURLStringKey=http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/50/49/001-79699-A_93OMDU5KFG/dkjnjkq9eax1n2wpf8rik5agns2z43ikqu/InstallAssistant.pkg, PKURLTransportErrorStatusCodeKey=403, PKURLTransportErrorResponseHeadersKey={

And this is after the update took 3 hours to download. So, there is currently no way to install macOS Big Sur, even if you are able to download it.

Almost got finished download, after 3 tries, on a MacBook Air 2020 and got tmicrosoft.had to do with he Installation Failed message. Leading into this, I have been having problems just inputing sentences, particularly on comment sections. As I compose, sound gets turned off, the video gets big or small, words get placed somewhere else in the paragraph. My first Mac worked great until an upgrade that froze it. Did someone hire the stable genius at the server farm or something? I am close to ditching all apple products. I went to apple as I tired to all the tweaking I

this kludge

See what I mean about things getting jumbled up? Perhaps I shall return to

I give up. This Macbook air is KLUDGE!!!!!!

I have a 2020 Macbook Air. On 12 November 2020 I got numerous "Installation Failed" whilst downloading. Details cited by others here. I resolved not to install it for several months. That lasted overnight, and here I am on the "lucky day" for Friday the Thirteenth and decided to give it a go as it seemed an auspicious day. Download no problem, less than 30 minutes.

During the update, I thought, "Well, isn't that nice to provide ocean sounds waiting for the download." Nope, the fan was going louder than I heard before. But minute timer was fairly accurate during the install process. After installation, I started updating the Apple apps, checked out Mail app, and a bunch of other apps important to me. Everything seems normal so far.

I went into System Preferences to check out that neighborhood. All good. Then I noted my battery icon at the top and it was draining and not charging. When updating, I charge it and leave it charging until finished. At first, I thought it was a major problem if battery plugged in and not charge. I pulled the cable out and reinserted it. No problem. I'm a satisfied customer and things seem to work normally.
