It's getting worse. The problem is that there are two sides to Apple. One side develops new products, new software, and builds and infrastructure to support expected user behaviour, based on past activity. The other side of Apple is the marketing side. The marketers are much more efficient and are, year over year, driving more interest and hype in Apple products than the technicians are prepared to handle.

People who try to download on day one will have a poor experience. But the news of "Apple servers going down due to unprecedented demand" will drive more users to want to upgrade to Big Sur in the future. It's a vicious cycle.

The update servers are overloaded. You’ll have to wait a few days.
