Why won't GarageBand update without Big Sur?

My 2013 imac is now unable to update to the latest OS however the app store still had me update iwork apps just fine, garageband however said it needed ios 11 for the update to be installed. this is the first time i have experienced this, i would have expected to be allowed to update all the apps if some of them allowed me to update. can anyone explain why?

It’s some kind of glitch in the App Store. Updates that can’t run on your version of macOS should NOT be showing up for you. They never have before. Wait a few days and see if the glitch clears. Lots of us are in the same boat. I have a late 2013 iMac that is ineligible to run Big Sur yet I’m getting the GarageBand update offer also.

The current version of GarageBand 10.4.1 at the AppStore is a special release, one of the first universal applications designed for solely Big Sur. It has been compiled to run on Intel machines as well as the new Apple Silicon M1 processor. You really need to have macOS 11 Big Sur installed to be able to run these new universal applications.

It is pity that the AppStore is offering you the update, when your Mac is running Catalina.
