an error occurred applying the software update

I’m trying to update my MacBook Pro 13 from Catalina to Big Sur..... I am unable to update as it says “an error occurred applying the software update”. I had taken a time machine backup... it doesn’t show up right now! Is there anything I can do? It’s urgent.... I am a student and need to be attending class using my laptop

We had a similar problem with my wife's iMac (21.5" 4K). Some error, undefined, was reported and the computer kept booting to the slash circle.

So yes, first thing, do the Cmd-R boot, then open Disk Utilities and run Disk First Aid to clear up any potential problems.

Quit then go to the install screen and Big Sur should be a choice. Also make certain your drive is showing.

What I think happens sometimes is that the installer gets interrupted or corrupted and then the computer is left in an unstable state.

Hey everyone,

I had that problem while updating for the BigSur and my computer got stück. During the initialization, the computer

was entering automatically in recovery mode (or something like this) and saying that there was a problem during the

installation of the new OSX.

I then entered in recovery mode before the installation try using (cmd + shift + r) and managed to reset the mac to factory configurations, which means back to Maverick OS and just then entering there the Apple Store and re-downloading and re-installing the BigSur. Finally, I used the Time Machine I had in an external drive to retrieve my documents and stuff.

I hope it helps someone out there that got into this inconvenient trouble.

Here's the fix: External. Plug in your MBP/MBA SSD via External Adapter, and install Big Sur from a USB Bootable.

I had a client with a Early 2015 MBA and her issue was the same. She went to the apple store prior, and they installed a new SSD temporarily and got Big Sur to work, so they told her she needed a new SSD, because the Genius Bar wasn't able to get Big Sur to work on her current 500GB SSD, only Catalina. I ran into the same issues no matter what I tried. The issue is the internal SSD becomes Unmounted during the installation process, most likely from the installer package, and doesn't Remount.

The solution that worked for me was to plug her SSD into an external adapter, and then load Big Sur that way. I also tried a 2012 MBA SSD via External Adapter on her 2015 MBA and Big Sur installed perfect as well.

Seems like when it's plugged in externally it's not having that dismount problem.
