After every major upgrade there are processes that occur in the background such as new indexes and databases for such things as Photos or Search. These take time and the system needs to be up and running to resolve it. Try setting system NOT to log out or shut down for a day or so and you should see improvement.

i have the same issue too after upgrade to Big Sur my macbook pro 2018 keeps heats up, after fews days the heating is stop but the fan still keep running all the time , then i found the kernel task is throttling the CPU. Fan running at high speed. Then my macbook can’t use at all .before upgrade to Big Sur everything is fine. I have searched this problem on the internet.many people had the same experiences while they are upgraded to the new system. I was bring it to apple genius bar, then they check it and said there is some problem while download or upgrade the system , they collect my mac to reinstalll the system didn’t solve the issue, they ask to replace the logic board, but i haven't done anything with my macbook, only upragded to the new system and cause it happen,so i talk to their staff , they just told me there is no internal information talk about this. so they suggest to write a product feedback about this situation and it will send to their head office but they won't reply. if recived a certain number of the feedback, they will have some action. such as macbook pro butterfly keyboard replacement etc. otherwise they wont do anything for you.

I am not an electrical engineer, and I shouldn't have to be. I am, like many others that purchase Apple products, a consumer. I have performed all the recommendations and to no avail. Catalina had a few problems when it was first installed; however, it didn't take months to correct. The only conclusion to make is that Big Sur was designed with some major flaws. It will either require a major fix/update or if you have the ability to restore Catalina, then that is what I would recommend, until Big Sur gets a fix. For those who haven't updated to Big Sur, wait until the fan issue/power drain issue has been resolved.

Yes, I have the exact same problem. After upgrading, my fan is going crazy, the machine is hot, and it drains the battery in no time. I have been through all of the steps in this article but it still is happening. https://macreports.com/how-to-fix-big-sur-battery-drain-issues/#:~:text=Some%20users%20have%20reported%20that%2C%20after%20upgrading%20to,warm%20and%20the%20fan%20runs%20loudly%20and%20continually.

I have also noticed that in the Activity Monitor the kernalmanagerd process is running at 70% CPU and my machine is super slow.

I'm running a 2018 15" Macbook Pro with 32GB RAM / 2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9

Same issue here.

MBP15" 2018 i7 2.6ghz 32GB RAM 1TB SSD intel uhd 630 and radeon pro 560

After working with big sur for over a month now it is running between 50 and 65° C with no external display.

Running with Apple Thunderbolt display and LG 5K 27" it is running between 65° and 85° with peaks at up to 100°.

I have set my fans so that they run 100% as of 60° C of CPU Proximity

Usual apps MS Office incl. Teams, several parallel instances of FileMaker, apple music and or spotify. Sometimes Parallels with Win 10 or different versions of MacOS.

Catalina and Mohave on this machine were running on average 10° less.

Same. I JUST bought this new Macbook Pro for school and I regret updating to Big Sur. Nothing but problems! Preview was no longer working with my Canon MX492 printer scanner on Draft mode and I had to search for and re-install drivers and figure out why in order to stop wasting money printing, the laptop is overheating and the fan is super load when doing nothing more than watching a youtube video and the USB-C port won't work with my external Dell 4k monitor via its Displayport connection but somehow works with HDMI...? I called Apple but seriously, how is it my job to fix these things, I am busy and bought a new laptop to solve problems with my previous 2013 Macbook lagging and flashing screen colour changes and blurring when watching videos.... Isn't it included in the $2500 CAN price tag to do the work of making sure your laptop functions properly? I think I need to roll back to Catalina!

Does Apple have any idea, exactly how long Big Sur will take to create "new indexes" before things will operate as with Catalina? I performed every recommendation to fix the "fan and overheating" issue to no avail. It has been two days since the "upgrade" and the fan still is running for applications that should never cause overheating and excessive fan operation .. I mean .. word processing? .. really? This is terribly annoying. If this is a software bug, as I suspect, when is there going to be a fix .. APPLE???

I have shut down everything and am now unable to shut down the computer because it tells me that something is running, but there is nothing. So I checked in the background because the fan is still going crazy, and the thing that seems to be taking up a lot of power is this APUdevicesAgent. Some places say it is affected by external hd which I have but eject regularly. So far I can’t figure out why it’s running all the time and making the fan go crazy. (Just bought this MacBook in Aug, so should be fine). If anyone has any info, pls let me know! Thx!

2015 Macbook Pro 15 I7 2.5. Updated to OS Big Sur about a week ago. Previous OS was good with few issues. The aforemention APS whatever running in the background did sometimes cause fan and CPU issues and I would just force quit it. With Big Sur I am seeing reduce battery life. Also there are times when the fan just goes bonkers. Activity monitor does not show any unusual CPU usage. I quit everything and the fans stop spinning. Something is messed up with OS Big Sur. Previously very good computer and now having random serious issues.

Yeah I've uninstalled chrome and it was ok for couple days then it has been again overheating. I'm keeping an eye on what apps I'm using; it's overheating when using Microsoft office apps too (words, excel, and powerpoint)!! Not so sure which apps are causing that but even when I am just on safari with several tabs it just overheats and the fans start working as if its taking off :]
