Ipad screen cracked randomly

My ipad 8 generation screen cracked on its own. I had a screen protector as well as hard case. Surprisingly the screen guard has no damage but the ipad screen had a hairline crack. What should I do?

iPad, iPadOS 14

Call to make an appointment to bring your iPad into your nearest, “local” Apple Store for diagnosis, evaluation and potential options.

Did you purchase extended, two-year AppleCare+ within 60 days of purchase of that iPad?

If no, then be prepared for an expensive replacement cost of that iPad.

Cracked screens are NOT covered under the free, one year standard AppleCare warranty plan, as the standard, free one-year AppleCare ONLY warranties against manufacturing defects and not damage that maybe user caused.

I’d be inclined to leave the screen protector in place - and directly contact the retailer.

Proving a screen defect for a warranty claim is notoriously difficult. With the undamaged screen protector on place, you might have reasonable argument that an external source would leave evidence of external impact on the screen protector.

If your retailer will not help with a warranty claim, you may be stuck with seeking an out-of-warranty exchange with Apple. The cost is typically reported to be c.60% of the “as new” price of the iPad. If you have the benefit of the optional AppleCare+ Plan (for which you will have paid a fee), you can use one of your two “incidents”; a nominal fee will be charged for the exchange.
