iCloud tabs not syncing/working

iCloud Tabs has stopped working on all of my devices

iCloud Tabs isn't working on any of my devices. I can't see them from my MacBook Pro (macOS Catalina), nor from my iPhone X (running 14.2). I have quadruple checked and iCloud is on and Safari is checked and everything is correct on each device. It was working fine up until I noticed the issued several days ago. I haven't changed any settings or behaviors or changed any features, but for whatever reason it isn't working anymore. And if it does, my computer shows iPhone tabs from the day before and not current tabs and my phone doesn't show my computer tabs at all anymore. Although it's small, it's a feature of iCloud that I use quite often and it's a nuisance to have it not working properly.

I followed all suggestions on forums and articles to turn off iCloud, turn off Safari, etc. on each device and turn it back on but still nothing. I've restarted and rebooted a plethora of times and it's still the same issue. Does anyone have any insights on what could be causing this issue and how to fix it?

I know it sure is frustrating. If you call Apple, it is free to talk with an advisor. I worked with a senior advisor, told them the steps I already did. We ran through some more steps and I ended up having to send my diagnostics to their engineers. It took a few days (the engineers work via email only), but they did get mine working. With that being said it took a lot of time and caused heaps of frustration. I made two appointments Apple certified repair locations and they both said it had to do with Apple iCloud servers. So I don’t think you can do anything to fix it, if you already ran through the steps. I think they have to fix it at their end. I had three Apple devices not working. They asked me to clear my device and start again. I refused to do that because there was no way three devices were not working correctly. Also, one of my devices was brand new. I also had an Apple location removed the newest iOS I just put on and replace again, just to see if they could fix it. They could not help me. I’m just trying to save you some time. This is what finally ended up working for me. I hope this helps.

This is terrible. Come on Apple! Get your act together. Customers don’t pay premium prices for devices that don’t sync. It used to work so we all know it’s not impossible. Probably a simple fix but with everyone working from home yet, it’s obviously not getting done. Really stupid. Steve Jobs would not have allowed this simple issue to continue unresolved. 😡

Like others I continue to have problems. And, like others, I don't have hours to spend on the phone with Apple customer service/engineers either. So I keep waiting for a fix. Something I find interesting is my devices have reached a sort of "stable" level of disfunction. I have three Apple devices:

  • 2020 16" MacBook Pro: On system reboot, the Safari iCloud tabs accessed via the task bar cloud button will display currently open tabs on both my iPad Pro and iPhone Pro Max. However, the iPhone tabs aren't current - and they change between reboots. So, iPhone tabs are displayed, but they are never accurate to what is actually open on the iPhone. I can click on one of the iCloud tabs and Safari will open a window to that tab. What's interesting is if I try to close one of the tabs by clicking the semi-opaque "x" that appears next to the iCloud tab in the list, the entire list of open tabs will disappear for both devices. The only way to get them back is to restart the MacBook Pro. I've reproduced this behavior many, many times.
  • 2019 iPad Pro: Never display iCloud tabs for either of the other two devices
  • 2021 iPhone 12 Pro Max: Never display iCloud tabs for either of the other two devices. this is actually a brand new phone I recently acquired through AppleCare due to a cracked screen. iOS was restored via iCloud back up.

I've tried all the tricks to get iCloud tabs back including: restarting, signing in / out, new profile, etc. Also had several software updates. Nothing solves the problem.

Mine is hit and miss. My iPhone 12 Pro (14.4.2) and iPad mini (14.4.1) can see each others' tabs. But my iMac (Catalina 10.15.7) can't see either and my phone and iPad can't see the iMac tabs. I can hand off from the iPhone to the iMac, but not from the iPad to the iMac or from the iMac to anything. Really frustrating.

Well, this isn't fixed for me, at all. AND, I finally broke down and called Apple tech support. The problem has been elevated to the Engineers and I've had two calls so far. And yet the issue remains. I've even told the rep who calls that the issue is on the server side based on information posted in this thread. Still no joy. Highly annoying!

And we have far more than enough bandwidth...ATT fibre w/gigabit down/up speeds. Not to mention, that sounds like a red herring anyway as this "feature" should work on a cellular network, no ISP required. I've tried to access iCloud tabs while on cellular only, also no joy. Furthermore, it was working just fine last summer when we were at an extended stay hotel and connected to the free wifi. That free wifi was definitely not huge bandwidth. It is not an ISP bandwidth issue.

Has iCloud tabs started working for anyone yet? I have 4 devices and it's not working on any of them. I've tried all the usual steps... signing out and back in, toggle safari from iCloud etc and still not joy. The iOS devices don't show any open tabs and the Macs show a blank box as below. Handoff and all the other iCloud functions work, just the tabs are not. I don't mind waiting for Apple to fix this at their end but I just want to check to see if it's just me!

I'm having a similar problem. The tabs *are* syncing correctly from my MacBook Pro (16") OS 11.4 to my iPhone 11Pro iOS 14.6. My iPhone tabs are syncing correctly to my Mac and to my iPad Pro (11", 2021, iPadOS 14.6). My iPad tabs are syncing correctly to both of the other devices.

What's really odd is that, not only are my Mac tabs not syncing to my iPad, but I have *old* tabs showing where the new ones should be, some dating back 8 months. On top of that, I can't get rid of them. I swipe, click the red Close button, the tab disappears for about 2 seconds, and then it magically reappears. The list has about 30 of these tabs in it and never changes.

I called tech support and spoke to a Senior Advisor, who has referred the issue to the engineers. Holding my breath now.

coming up on 2/3 - 3/4 of a year now with this not working. I finally broke down and called Apple a couple months ago. there was lots of activity initially with the tech calling me back with new questions from the engineers. Then....silence. Nothing now for weeks and weeks. Making matters worse, the tech didn't give me any way to follow up. No reference or case number to use if I were to call back. So life goes on without a feature I used to use multiple times every day. Of course, this isn't the biggest problem facing the world. But it sure is annoying that Apple can't fix this quickly, or it seems at all!

It used to just work. Now, it just doesn't. Guess Apple is turning into Microsoft.

I hear your frustration.

Just a few days ago, I upgraded from macOS Catalina to macOS Big Sur. I was hoping (and also not expecting) that this would somehow resolve my iCloud tabs issue. My issue is that on my Mac laptop, very old iCloud tabs for my iPhone will show up and can't be deleted. The issue is only on my Mac laptop. This same issue doesn't show up on my iPad.

Well, the upgrade went smoothly but the problem on my Mac still remains: old iCloud tabs for my iPhone cannot be deleted; they magically re-appear each time.

It seems to me that somehow locally on my drive, there's some old corrupted preferences file that Safari keeps referring to? Maybe? I have already deleted preferences, cookies, history, etc. in ways that I know how and the issue keeps re-appearing.
