What formats can Apple Books open and read?

I'm trying to open a book in Apple Books that I originally purchased in Kobo, then brought into Adobe Digital Editions, and then exported to an "ePub" file. Apple Books can recognize and display the file, but can't open the book, citing, "It is formatted incorrectly, or is not a format that Apple Books can open." What formats can Apple Books open, beside those purchased directly from Apple?

I don't believe the Kindle app can open ePub format books, either. I don't care what app I read the book in, as long as it's not the Rakuten Kobo app because that app won't let me see what page # of the total pages in the book I'm on. Dumbfounding!

Thanks Tom. I had already had a chat with a Kobo agent. Ended up repeating my original question 1/2 hr into the conversation, to which her answer was, “Kobo app can’t display page #n of total pages of book”. Chose not to give her a bad review out of kindness. Still dumbfounded by that inability of the app. Intentionally disabled to lead more Kobo device sales? Not working here. Next time I’ll just buy the book from Apple Books for the same price as Rabokan Kobo.
