MacBook Pro bricked after failed Big Sur update 😵 ⚰️

Hi Guys and Gals.

I saw that there was an update to Big Sur today so clicked update. It all downloaded fine and I clicked all the items to go ahead. It said it'd be a while so i stepped away from the computer. When i returned the screen was black - no status bar, no nothing, but I could tell the LED was on. Nothing would wake it up so I eventually held the power button to force a shutdown.

Now it won't boot. Tried SMC, PRAM, holding shift, option keys, recovery mode etc etc. Tried all many many times.

The only thing that happens is the LED for the screen turns on. So i can see it's slightly lit black, and the apple logo on the outside of the screen is lit up.

An automatic Catalina update destroyed my dads iMac a month or two back - resulting in a new SSD and a cracked screen from opening it up. And now my MacBook Pro (A1502) is now dead?? What's the deal?

At least it would boot into recovery mode - this one won't even get to the loading bar, or chime when i'm trying to reset the PRAM!

Any ideas? I've done everything I know to do. It was working just fine before the update, and now i'm kicking myself. Cant even do a restore from my backup!

😰

Just for info sharing, it was reported that unplugging the IO board (the one with the SD-Card, HDMI and USB port) allows Big Sur 11.0.x to further boot an "bricked" MacBook Pro Late 2013 - to finish its Big Sur 11.0.x OS install.

Once done, connecting an USB or Thunderbolt LAN adapter gets the MacBook Pro back connected to the Internet (because the unplugged IO board incl. also WiFi and BT - so not working so far anymore) and then allows Mac OSX Updater to search and update to latest Big Sur 11.1.x (Apple reported to avoid the "brick" issue with).

Once Big Sur 11.1.x update has finished, reconnecting the IO Board, the "brick" issue is solved without any hardware replacement needed.

So, wondering if it ever was/ is a bricked hardware, while this seems (at least for some) that it was/ is just Big Sur 11.0.x stuck the IO Board and therefore from booting, but Big Sur 11.1x update solve it quickly (by getting this installed with the method described above).

May this is helpful info (if not known by Apple Genius Bar Experts) and offers another way to "repair" an "bricked" MacBook Pro Late 2013 (or Mid 2014) by lower costs for the value of the users affected.

How about you leave the MBP on with a black screen until the battery dies? Then, try booting using internet recovery with the power plugged in.

How to boot into internet recovery - there are two options for you:

  1. Install the latest OS release - Power on the Mac by holding Option/Alt - Command - R at the same time. This will bring up a spinning globe and load the Big Sur latest release recovery on the screen.
  2. If you don't want to upgrade to Big Sur, then press Shift - Option/Alt - Command - R at the same time. Same as the other option, just adding a shift key to the combo. This will NOT bring up the Big Sur recovery - it will show a spinning globe and load up the macOS that came with your Mac. So when you bought your Mac brand-new and it came preinstalled with macOS Sierra, it will boot up macOS Sierra recovery screen. Then you can format the disk, install, etc.

NOTE: When using internet recovery, you might be asked to connect to a Wi-Fi network - if your disk is corrupted, it may not be able to get the Wi-Fi credentials from the disk to automatically use them.

I hope this helps everyone having these problems.

Cheers, Jack

I have a Mid-2014 MBP and internet recovery and everything works. In fact, I'm able to install OS X Mavericks with the Shift - option - command - r combo.

I suggest that to remove the hard drive, and then trying to boot - if your Mac doesn't boot, it means somethings been burnt out on the mobo.

Although the chances of this happening are very remote. A software failure may not necessarily bust the mobo unless it severely heated the Mac or something.

If your Mac utilizes special screws, I suggest you order a screwdriver for that nut on Amazon.

💻 MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2014.

The same problem as many other people.

My option, how to go beyond the black screen - at the very moment when the screen backlight turns on, you need to disconnect the MagSafe power connector. It doesn't always work (not every time), but it works after 10-20 power-up attempts. I also disconnect all external devices from USB / Thunderbolt. Possibly connecting / disconnecting MagSafe is causing some changes in the I/O board (some restart?).

My attempts to solve this problem (with stuck black screen) have so far been unsuccessful:

  • I tried to install Big Sur on top of the installed one;
  1. from Recovery;
  2. from Internet Recovery;
  3. from a bootable USB disk created on another Mac;
  • I formatted the disk to HFS+ and tried to install Big Sur on a completely cleaned disk;
  • I tried to install OS X Mavericks (using Internet Recovery with "Shift") and tried to install old EFI / SMC firmware from https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518#mbp but it didn't installed.

Now I try not to turn off or restart the MBP, so as not to spend half an hour trying to turn it on. 😅

Hope Apple engineers will release an update that fixes the problem! 😰

had Same issue MacBook Pro 2014 13 inch

it actually changed my FileVault password after I tried to reinstall Catalina with internet recovery.

This happened me to during the Big Sur update on late Thursday when upgrading from Catalina.

See link as it’s apparently happening to Mac’s of a certain year.

https://www.macrumors.com/2020/11/15/macos-big-sur-update-bricking-some-macbook-pros/

I have a Mid-2014 MB Pro.

I did a CCC clone and TM backup before this happened.

During the Big Sur install it restarted to a black screen when it restarted.

Didn’t even see the installing happen yet when this happened.

 I tried everything and still wouldn’t continue the update. Just stuck on the black screen.

Holding option key didn’t work with USB thumbdrive installer when restarting and

zapping PRAM worked at the beginning but later in the troubleshooting process it didn’t work. No keyboard commands worked except resetting SMC and internet recovery if I restarted many times while resetting SMC.

I was able to boot into internet recovery mode if I did an SMC reset a few times.

I tried to reinstall Catalina and got it to finish but wasn’t easy.

I was able to startup the mac and see the desktop after that but I may have had to force shut down and SMC reset a few times perhaps.

After that, i restarted the mac and it still kept booting to black screen.

I tried to update to Big Sur but I couldn’t

do that because when it got to the point to install, it didn’t recognize my FileVault password anymore and couldn’t login with both accounts.

When I initially started the Big Sur update it did accept my FileVault password but not after I reinstalled Catalina.

It couldn’t mount the data partition to do the install. It seemed in disk utility the system volume was mounted but not the data volume. When I tried to mount that it asked for my password but it wouldn’t accept that or accept the other accounts password.

When I picked up my shiny new iPhone 12 pro max at the apple store the next day I had apple level 2 support on the phone while waiting in line at the Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles.

They didn’t know anything about this issue but i told them I was just going to wipe it and restore from a backup.

That night, after several attempts having to reset SMC as it wouldn’t do anything without doing that, I was able to get into internet recovery using command, option, R.

Using Disk Utility I formatted with Mac OS extended journaled. Didn’t format as APFS as I knew it would convert it during the install.

I installed Catalina successfully (as Big Sur is not available yet with internet recovery) but every time it restarted it went to the black screen so I forced it to shut down holding the power button and reset SMC. Did this a few times until I saw the keys light up and the apple logo with the progress bar and then the install continued. Had to do this several times until the install was complete as it always restarted to a black screen. I did wait to see if it would continue but the black screen persisted for a long time.

The same thing happened when I updated to Big Sur after that but I just did the same thing. shut down and did an SMC reset to get it back to installing.

After the install of Big Sur it started up and I set it up and finished but when I would restart the mac it still went to a black screen. The screen was dark but illuminated a tiny bit like before.

I tried several times with the same result.

After talking to an Apple Consultant friend on the phone the next day about this issue he asked does it startup now.

I tried it and it started perfectly and is starting up normally every time now thankfully. I was going to call Apple but thankfully I don’t have to. I guess letting it sit overnight cleared up the issue magically 😎👍🏻.

I am thinking it was some power issue maybe. I don’t know.

I am very happy it’s working now. I am sure there are many people with bricked MacBook Pros. Hopefully they did a backup.
