I can't update GarageBand

Everytime on my MacBook Pro 16" 10.15.7 I try to update Garageband it keeps saying "GarageBand can’t be installed on “MacBook Pro” because macOS version 11 or later is required"

So I deleted it and tried to new download from the Mac App Store and STILL and getting this message!

What is going on???

I called Apple Support to get another Apple disappointment....I bought an iMac in 2014 and in Nov 2020, Big Sur cannot be installed because that new macOS 11 only works from models from 2014 onwards. Shame on you Apple! Even your response was offensive, 'Trade in for a new iMac'. In October, my HDD stopped working...so now with an expensive replacement....I will be stuck forever with an outdated OS. I had faith on Apple products... I have a lot....but now I don't

Just posting to agree that this is incredibly frustrating.

I spent the last three days getting my 2013 MacBook Pro from a factory reset / wipe through several different OS updates so my father-in-law could use it for GarageBand (the only reason he wants a mac is to use GarageBand) only to learn that it's impossible? Why? I understand not letting GarageBand work on OS 10.1 or 10.2... but I've got 10.15.7... it's the most recent operating system as of a month ago. Why not just let people download the version of GarageBand that was available a month ago?!

That's what worked for me with a 2017 MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7

I went to the purchase section and there was an icon for Garageband and a 'cloud' icon to download it. If I clicked on the Garageband icon it took me to a page to download the Big Sur version. If I click on the 'cloud' download, a popup said, there's a newer version or continue to load the most current version for my system. I took the 'my system' path and Garageband loaded and works. I can't tell you what version it is because the 'about Garageband' is greyed out hence not selectable.

But if I do a get info on the .app file it shows version 10.3.5, created Aug. 22, 2019

That seems to be the actual problem with the new version. From what I can tell so far, the most convenient workaround *) at the moment is to find someone with a Mac running Big Sur, let them to create a temporary user account for you on their Mac, then use it to log into your App Store account and "buy" GarageBand on that Mac. Once completed, GarageBand will appear on your Catalina Mac in your Purchased tab.

*) Alternatively you may want to install Big Sur on a separate partition or on an external drive if your Mac supports it. But it's not necessarily a trivial task.
