iphone 12 pro max setup problems

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and I’m upgrading to iPhone 12 Pro Max. I’m taking the path of having the data transfer by sitting the phones side by side. In preparation, I updated my old iPhone’s iOS and backed it up to iCloud. I then started the transfer and had to answer some questions on the new phone. The first attempt had less questions than the second attempt. For example, with the second attempt, I went thru a Siri setup. Not sure why it was different the second time.

With the first attempt, the new phone got to a Software Update screen. I thought it was strange that it was going to update the iOS when I thought it was busy transferring my data, but I went ahead and chose download and install thinking maybe it needed the later iOS to proceed. I got a spinning thing and it sat like that for over three hours.

I finally gave up on the first attempt and chose to Start Over. With my second attempt, I saw more setup steps as I mentioned before and I again made it to the Software Update screen on the new phone. The old phone is still showing the white half screen that says “Finish on new iPhone”and “keep this phone near”. But it has had a spinning thing for a long time now. I have yet to choose download and install on the new phone thinking it should finish the data transfer first.

I feel like nothing is happening and all I can do is use my iPad to inquire about what’s going wrong.

What should I do?

i finally succeeded and think I know what the problem was in my case.

my phones had two different versions of iOS and the new phone had the older version and kept getting stuck on the update. So I finally set it up as a new phone. Updated it and reset it again. After this I was able to transfer from my own phone with no trouble at all. I’m glad this got solved but this is the most non apple experience I’ve ever had phew!

I’ve let the phones sit for over four hours with this second attempt. No change. I’ve decided to try downloading and installing the update on the new phone. This time it’s acting differently. I’m getting a blue progress bar instead of a spinning thing. It’s going slow but we’ll see what happens.

Now it’s verifying update after finishing the progress bar. Phone is restarting. Apple logo progress bar. So we’ll see what I get when the progress bar is completed. Fingers crossed.

Weird. Progress bar didn’t get far and the screen went black and the progress bar started over. Again, it didn’t progress far and went black then got the hello screen. Unlocked the phone and it says it’s preparing transfer. So the four hours were a waste of time?

Now I’m getting a Transferring data from iPhone progress bar and it’s estimating about an hour.

Going to bed. Maybe it will be done when I wake up.

Dear Apple, this isn’t fun. It’s not “just working”.

I have this exact same problem.

I have tried 4 times by using my old phone and it got stuck at the update software step. I even left it overnight. finally I reset the phone and tried restoring it with by MacBook Pro. it also tried to update and said that the software file corrupted. I also set it up as a new phone still it won't update. My iPhone 7 is on 14.3 and iPhone 12 pro comes with 14.1

im now on attempt number 6 its still stying to update and feel pretty hopeless this im not used to from apple.

the phone also came with a tmobile sim in it. I didn't buy straight from apple because it was out of stock. non t mobile sims work in so I believe that I got an unlocked phone. I don't know if this is relevant but im wondering if this was the case with you? `I've never received an iPhone with a carrier sim in it already.

If anyone has a solution please let me know

My phone came from Apple and it was set up for Verizon. I don’t know if it’s unlocked or not. I’ve opted to do the upgrade program so I’m paying monthly for it. I suspect it’s not unlocked.

I don’t really know why it worked after a few attempts. I had assumed it was because everyone getting a 12 Max or Mini that day were all jamming the servers and by late at night, the traffic lightened. But you’re well past that time. I do remember that when it finally worked, I noticed the steps I went thru were different. I’ve had lengthy phone upgrades in the past but never had it fail so much. I suspect throwing the iOS update into the process was a possible culprit but I don’t know for sure that was the hold up.

The more popular and mainstream Apple gets, the more like Microsoft they become, with rushed OS updates, bugs, etc. I had just experienced my iMac nearly dying from a MacOS update. Thank goodness for backups.
