Printing went well on Catalina. Now printing stopped and showed message 'Filter failed'. Using printer Lexmark C543 and removed and entered the printer once. Same problem. Printer supply is visible in browser. Seems to be OS problem.

PROBLEM SOLVED!
Here is what I did. I downloaded the color driver package from Download Color driver package . The mono package is at Download Mono driver package . I deleted my old printer and reset the printing system first. Then I used the Find Any File utility to find all the files with Lexmark in it and trashed all of them and emptied the trash. Some require an admin password to delete. For good measure I rebooted then. At that point I ran the installer that I had downloaded. Then I added the printer. In my case bonjour printer showed up and I selected that and for driver I selected under Use: the Lexmark universal driver. Voila! It printed. All printer options are there.
I don't know who can mark this original question as solved but this is the solution and not selecting generic Postscript printer.
Thanks for the thought on resetting the printer system: tried that, but sadly made no difference on my 'Filter failed' Lexmark cx517de. Fortunately our other Lexmark and Xerox printers still work before and after the reset!
I just upgraded to Big Sur today. Now I can no longer print to my Lexmark CX310dn. I get a filter failed error. Apple - what are you doing to fix this? I can't run my business without a printer!!!
Having upgraded yesterday from Catalina to Big Sur I can no longer use Quark 2020 or Oki C531.
What on earth was the reason for sending updates that mess up the system?????
Tried deleting the printer and re uploading, that didn't work.

Quark have informed me that they will not have a compatable version of Quark 2020 until sometime in December. That's not good enough, especially since I have been hounded by them to upgrade to 2020 for weeks! I also agree that one should check first before upgrading, but when one gets a reminder everytime the machine is switched, the temptation is to doit just to stop the messages coming up!
Quark just crashes when opening and the Oki printer gives a meassage: filter failed, I have tried deleting printer and adding it agan, but no joy.
I think most avid Mac users will find this post ironic.
I have posted previously about my issues with my MacBook Pro M1 and Big Sur.
My two printers, a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 MK2 and an HP Laserjet Pro P1102W won't work with my above Mac system.
My workaround is this. Send my files from my Mac to a NAS, then open the files from the NAS with my Windows 7
PC and print them on the two printers.
Wake up Apple how can you be happy with the situation described above.

I have the same problem with Lexmark CS417dn. I am extremely angry with Apple for causing this problem with the new OS. We don't all use just our phones top post on Instagram Apple. Some of us actually do graphics for print and we need to PRINT proofs. I have no time to dick around with this and I can't even find the printer driver to delete it and reinstall. It's not in Printers and Scanners because I reset that so it is empey and it's not in Apps - so where do they hide it? I did a search in Apps and deleted the Lexmark file that appeared in the search but not in the apps list.
This is an $8000 27" Imac Pro and I am really really really unhappy with it Apple. Fix your ****** OS.
Seriously nategold? You think we're all going to do all of that???? Good lord, you must have a lot of free time on yhour handd. NOT a Chance that is going to happen over here. We need to stop letting companies like Apple get away with this type of sloppy O/S design. They'll be just like the disaster that is Microsoft Windows next.
The simple fact that so many printers aren't working with the Big Sur update is a disgrace.

Thank you so much! my Lexmark CX417de finally works again! I had successfully printed with the generic drivers but could only print in black and white. I was definitely not interested in either downgrading to Catalina or replacing the printer.
Having loaded Big Sur O.S. onto my laptop Mac Book Pro ( purchased 2016) I can't print- with my Samsung Xpress M2070W printer, it worked fine with Catalina OS
please help...it is actually printing but just gobbly gook (corrupted text ) one line on top of the paper

This does and does not work.
It works in the sense that things print as expected (size, tray, etc) However, the DPI is more like a high-end dot matrix printer than laser.
The print quality on a Zerox Phaser (which I overall hate) is leaps and bounds better than the Lexmark with the new drivers.
I downloaded big Sur and am getting error "Filter Failed" when trying to print. i have deleted and readded the printer and also checked Generic Printer, but still not printing. i have a canon mf628cw. not sure where to find Generic PostScript Printer setting? TiA.

A Canon MF628Cw is mentioned in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a model supporting the driverless AirPrint technology, so you should be able to use this printer without drivers when connected to a network.
Drivers/software from the printer manufacturer may add functionality (slightly different drivers may be offered in different regions).

This seems to be an ongoing Big Sur problem. I typically encounter “ filter failed“ when I edit a page by either cropping or redacting.
I say that with confidence because if I send the document to an OS X Catalina machine it prints fine.
