Big Sur vs Catalina

Should i upgrade to Big Sur Macbook pro (retina, 15", Mid 2015) 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7? Last time I updated I wasn't able to use software I really needed or had to upgrade and didn't have the money.

  1. Should I upgrade considering the MacBook Pro's age?
  2. How do I find out if software is compatible with Big Sur? I'm assuming I contact the company if it is not an official Apple product but how do I find out for Apple software i.e. Final Cut, Logic. Catalina made it so I couldn't use Quicktime 7 Pro anymore and the current quicktime can't do things like save videos in a mode that it will always loop.

Thanks ahead for any help.

Nothing has changed here since the release of macOS 10.15 Catalina, applications will have to be 64-bit. App developers will issue updated apps if they want their apps to work on this newest macOS upgrade

It never pays to get too far behind in the software or hardware.

Your <retina, 15", Mid 2015) 2.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7> is quite capable of have no issue with Big Sur

Software that did not work in Catalina will not just magically work in Big Sur. The moratorium on 32-bit applications continues, and QuickTime Pro was no longer available prior to Catalina. I suggest that you install Big Sur onto an external SSD, and set that as the default boot drive. Work with it for awhile, and then make a determination about internal upgrade.

I am using Big Sur in the above manner with a 2014 MacBook Air (4 GB), and it is far more stable than my experience with all releases of Catalina. Look into the free VLC tool which can play, and convert videos that QuickTime cannot.
